Synopsis Reconnoissance Soil Survey of North Eastern Wisconsin (Classic Reprint) by : Andrew Robeson Whitson

Excerpt from Reconnoissance Soil Survey of North Eastern Wisconsin The northwestern portion of this area forms a part of the 'high plateau-like region of northern Wisconsin, and is dotted with lakes and swamps which are the source of a large number of rivers. The swamps and lakes of this plateau have an average elevation of about 1600 feet. The lowest land has an elevation of about 585 to 590 feet. Thus it will be seen that there is a difference be tween the highest and the lowest points within the area of some thing over 1000 feet. Water power. - The rivers of the area have wonderful possibilities for the development of water power, and a number of projects have been installed, but only a very small proportion of the available power has been developed. From the north line of Langlade County where the Wolf River crosses to Shawano, a distance of about 80 miles, there is a fall of 774 feet. The Oconto River through its course of 87 miles, all of which is within the area, has a total fall of 945 feet. All of the numerous streams which have their source in the high plateau-like crystalline rock region of northern Wisconsin, and reach their outlet within a comparatively short distance, must necessarily have a very rapid descent.
