Synopsis Jodo Notebook by : Bo Jespersen
"Jodo Notebook" is a fully illustrated manual of the Basic techniques (Kihon) of Shindo Muso Ryu (SMR) and the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei (ZNKR),and the 12 Kata of Seitei Jodo. It is an invaluable supplement to Jodo training to make learning easier and faster as well. Jodo (Japanese stick fighting) is taught either in Shindo Muso Ryu, or in the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei under the name Seitei Jodo. Both systems share the same Basics (12 Kihon). The differences are in the Kata (12 in Seitei Jodo, and 64 in SMR), and the training with other weapons arts besides the Jo and the Sword (Tachi) in Shindo Muso Ryu (in the 64 SMR Kata). The ZNKR Jodo organization is by far the largest international Jodo organization. Very few books are available on Jodo. Jodo is taught worldwide, but newer literature in English is hard to get. Most of the literature is in Japanese. The Notebook is made to fill this gap in literature. The author is co-writer with George W. Alexander of The Dictionary of Japanese Martial Arts, and illustrator of The Way of White Crane Karate, both from Yamazato Productions.

Synopsis Defensive Tactics for Today’s Law Enforcement by : Stephen K. Hayes
Few of the many defensive tactics books on the market include the training and methods of martial arts. Drawing on the centuries-old techniques of Ninjutsu, Defensive Tactics for Today’s Law Enforcement offers alternatives to the traditional police defensive tactics taught to most officers. This text stresses relying on natural tendencies in a violent encounter to ensure officer safety and to better utilize the techniques and training officers do receive. By integrating existing training with martial arts expertise, Defensive Tactics provides officers access a full complement of techniques to better navigate physical conflict safely and effectively. Intended for law enforcement practitioners, as well as practitioners of any other professions that present a personal security risk, Defensive Tactics for Today’s Law Enforcement will better equip readers with a diverse range of defensive tactics.

Synopsis The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu (Judo) by : H. Irving Hancock
The best guide to learning jiu-jitsu ever written in English, this is the most comprehensive study available. It describes the authentic form of judo developed in the late 19th century by Professor Jiguro Kano — not the many imitations often called by this name. Officially recognized by the Japanese government as the preeminent school of jiu-jitsu, the Kano system was the method in which Japanese armed forces and police were trained. The complete system of 160 holds and throws is clearly explained, with 487 photographs and four charts providing further clarification. Pressure points, balance, falling, and every other important aspect receives full and complete treatment. The first section presents 60 "tricks" of combat in strict sequence that prepare for part two, in which readers learn how to apply the advantages of the tricks they've learned. The third section deals with highly scientific tricks of combat, by which an opponent may be incapacitated — and the methods of kuatsu, or resuscitation, by which a fallen opponent may be revived. Martial arts students at every level of experience will find this classic guide a source of valuable information and instruction.

Synopsis Martial Arts Studies by : Paul Bowman
The phrase “martial arts studies” is increasingly circulating as a term to describe a new field of interest. But many academic fields including history, philosophy, anthropology, and Area studies already engage with martial arts in their own particular way. Therefore, is there really such a thing as a unique field of martial arts studies? Martial Arts Studies is the first book to engage directly with these questions. It assesses the multiplicity and heterogeneity of possible approaches to martial arts studies, exploring orientations and limitations of existing approaches. It makes a case for constructing the field of martial arts studies in terms of key coordinates from post-structuralism, cultural studies, media studies, and post-colonialism. By using these anti-disciplinary approaches to disrupt the approaches of other disciplines, Martial Arts Studies proposes a field that both emerges out of and differs from its many disciplinary locations.

Synopsis Old School by : Ellis Amdur
Koryu, literally, 'old flow from the past,' refers to Japanese martial traditions that predate the sweeping cultural changes that followed the Meiji Restoration of 1868. They generally have a very different character and tone from modern martial arts, such as kendo, judo or aikido which followed. More than the study of antique weapons, self-defense or a form of athletics, these martial traditions are a cultural legacy and a window to another time and place. In the first edition of Old School, Ellis Amdur, a renowned martial arts researcher, and himself an instructor in two different surviving koryu, gave readers a rare glimpse into feudal Japanese warrior arts, both as they were in the past and as they live on today. Nearly a decade later, he returns to the subject in this new, greatly expanded edition, bringing readers inside the dojos of a number ancient schools, providing details analysis of the evolution and morphology of uniquely Japanese weaponry, addressing the myth and reality of Japan's naginata-wielding warrior women, and discussing the modern relevance of the blood oaths, magical ritual and mysticism that often permeate the koryu. Finally, he looks at the challenge of preservation and transmission, especially as more and more practitioners of the koryu exist outside of Japan itself. Writing with a combination of the initiate's passion for his subject, and the scientist's rigorous search for the truth, Amdur asks critically: do the ancient traditions still meet the objectives of their founders? Are they successfully passing their ancient legacy down to the next generation? Over a third larger than the first edition and filled with new artwork and photography, Old School: Japanese Martial Traditions Expanded Edition will be an invaluable addition to the library of old readers and new alike.
