Synopsis Systems Engineering of Software-Enabled Systems by : Richard E. Fairley
A comprehensive review of the life cycle processes, methods, and techniques used to develop and modify software-enabled systems Systems Engineering of Software-Enabled Systems offers an authoritative review of the most current methods and techniques that can improve the links between systems engineering and software engineering. The author—a noted expert on the topic—offers an introduction to systems engineering and software engineering and presents the issues caused by the differences between the two during development process. The book reviews the traditional approaches used by systems engineers and software engineers and explores how they differ. The book presents an approach to developing software-enabled systems that integrates the incremental approach used by systems engineers and the iterative approach used by software engineers. This unique approach is based on developing system capabilities that will provide the features, behaviors, and quality attributes needed by stakeholders, based on model-based system architecture. In addition, the author covers the management activities that a systems engineer or software engineer must engage in to manage and lead the technical work to be done. This important book: Offers an approach to improving the process of working with systems engineers and software engineers Contains information on the planning and estimating, measuring and controlling, managing risk, and organizing and leading systems engineering teams Includes a discussion of the key points of each chapter and exercises for review Suggests numerous references that provide additional readings for development of software-enabled physical systems Provides two case studies as running examples throughout the text Written for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and practitioners, Systems Engineering of Software-Enabled Systems offers a comprehensive resource to the traditional and current techniques that can improve the links between systems engineering and software engineering.

Synopsis Computation-Aware Algorithmic Design for Cyber-Physical Systems by : Maria Prandini
This contributed volume aims to build the foundation of a framework for computationally aware algorithmic design for cyber-physical systems (CPSs), focusing on approaches that take computation into account at the design stage to address their impact on performance and safety. It demonstrates how novel techniques may emerge from the combination of formal methods, model predictive control, distributed optimization, data-driven methods, reconfigurable/adaptive methods, and information-theoretic techniques. Chapters are written by both researchers and practitioners and cover such topics as analysis and design of uncertain CPSs, cooperative and non-cooperative paradigms for handling complexity in large scale CPSs, task-relevant environment abstractions for autonomous systems based on information theory, information flow in event-based stabilization of CPSs, set-valued model predictive control, and automated synthesis of certifiable controllers for CPSs. State-of-the-art applications and case studies are provided throughout with a special focus on intelligent transportation systems and autonomous vehicles. Graduate students and researchers with an interest in CPS verification and control will find this volume to be a valuable resource in their work. It will also appeal to researchers from disciplines other than control, such as computer science, operations research, applied mathematics, and robotics.

Synopsis The Software Life Cycle by : Darrel Ince
The Software Life Cycle deals with the software lifecycle, that is, what exactly happens when software is developed. Topics covered include aspects of software engineering, structured techniques of software development, and software project management. The use of mathematics to design and develop computer systems is also discussed. This book is comprised of 20 chapters divided into four sections and begins with an overview of software engineering and software development, paying particular attention to the birth of software engineering and the introduction of formal methods of software development. The next section explores some aspects of software engineering that tend to get ignored in the literature, including functional programming, functional-programming languages, and relational databases. The reader is then introduced to structured methods of software development, along with software project management. The final chapter is devoted to software testing, which can be functional or nonfunctional. This monograph will be useful to software engineers and designers.

Synopsis Recent Developments in Cooperative Control and Optimization by : Sergiy Butenko
Over the past several years, cooperative control and optimization has un questionably been established as one of the most important areas of research in the military sciences. Even so, cooperative control and optimization tran scends the military in its scope -having become quite relevant to a broad class of systems with many exciting, commercial, applications. One reason for all the excitement is that research has been so incredibly diverse -spanning many scientific and engineering disciplines. This latest volume in the Cooperative Systems book series clearly illustrates this trend towards diversity and creative thought. And no wonder, cooperative systems are among the hardest systems control science has endeavored to study, hence creative approaches to model ing, analysis, and synthesis are a must! The definition of cooperation itself is a slippery issue. As you will see in this and previous volumes, cooperation has been cast into many different roles and therefore has assumed many diverse meanings. Perhaps the most we can say which unites these disparate concepts is that cooperation (1) requires more than one entity, (2) the entities must have some dynamic behavior that influences the decision space, (3) the entities share at least one common objective, and (4) entities are able to share information about themselves and their environment. Optimization and control have long been active fields of research in engi neering.

Synopsis Software Technologies for Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems by : Sang Lyul Min
The 8th IFIP Workshop on Software Technologies for Embedded and Ubiq- tous Systems (SEUS 2010) in Waidhofen/Ybbs, Austria, October 13-15, 2010, succeeded the seven previous workshops in Newport Beach, USA (2009); Capri, Italy (2008); Santorini, Greece (2007); Gyeongju, Korea (2006); Seattle, USA (2005); Vienna, Austria (2004); and Hokodate, Japan (2003); installing SEUS as a successfully established workshop in the ?eld of embedded and ubiquitous systems. SEUS 2010 continued the tradition of fostering cross-community scienti?c excellence and establishing strong links between research and industry. SEUS 2010 provided a forum where researchers and practitioners with substantial - periences and serious interests in advancing the state of the art and the state of practice in the ?eld of embedded and ubiquitous computing systems gathered with the goal of fostering new ideas, collaborations, and technologies. The c- tributions in this volume present advances in integrating the ?elds of embedded computing and ubiquitous systems. The call for papers attracted 30 submissions from all around the world. Each submission was assigned to at least four members of the Program Committee for review. The Program Committee decided to accept 21 papers, which were arranged in eight sessions. The accepted papers are from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Taiwan, UK, and USA. Two keynotes complemented the strong technical program.
