Synopsis Small Surrenders by : Emilie Griffin
“Griffin is a trustworthy guide . . . She writes with the unmistakable authenticity and authority of a woman steeped in prayer.” – America Join Emilie Griffin in this daily companion for the Lenten journey. Using ancient and modern texts as inspiration for her own reflections, Emilie Griffin nurtures and guides us into a deeper knowledge of ourselves and God. We discover that Lent is our chance for a fresh start, and an opportunity to joyfully put ourselves in God’s hands. Lent is a time when we deepen our faith in a journey not of grand gestures but of small surrenders. We are converted not only once in our lives but many times, and the conversion is little by little and often imperceptible. But Lent gives us a time to move the process along, intentionally, by a series of small surrenders. When we choose some exercise for Lent–daily worship, daily prayer, abstinence from one thing or another, it is not so much the practice that transforms us, but it is our willingness to change. —from Small Surrenders

Synopsis Small Surrenders by : Dorothy Houser
Determined to get accepted into Harvard, Porter Miller decides to begin her freshman studies at the University of Virginia and then apply for a transfer. Thinking that she can switch programs once she arrives on campus, she enrolls in nursing school merely as a formality. To Porter's surprise, she learns that she must continue in the nursing school for her first semester. While working at the medical center one evening, Porter tends to Thomas Lancaster, a cancer patient at the university hospital. Thomas's kindness and down-to-earth ways captivate her, and the two become romantically involved. But in the course of her relationship with Thomas, Porter makes a startling discovery about her family-one that could sever her relationship with Thomas forever. Small Surrenders focuses on the rippling effects of moral turpitude and how past mistakes can resurface to ruin two entire families. But it is also a story of faith, forgiveness, and survival as Porter works through the aftermath of her devastating discovery.

Synopsis Surrender and Catch by : K.H. Wolff
Su"ender and catch: give so you can receive, where the giving is your whole self, in a total experience. This is scarcely new on the American scene, and it is ancient knowledge, East and West. The fears of total surrender, the fears of self-revelation and of total abandon, although genuine, are likewise not new. Yet Kurt H. Wolff does attempt something new here, an epistemologi cal essay with the help of this old idea: his subtitle is 'experience and inquiry today'. He tries to formulate an integrated view which incorporates in the theory of total experience not only the accepted component- esthetics, religion, the recent American experience - but also a metaphysics, a phenomenology, a theory of perception, a social philosophy and a methodology of the social sciences, even a philosophy of history and psychopathology. Phenomenology (especially Alfred Schutz), the critical Frankfurt school (especially Adorno and Marcuse), sociology (especially Georg Simmel), and existentialism (especially Camus) are tied in together. It all looks topsy-turvy at first. We have here scraps of a diary, fragments of correspondence, a stray adolescent love letter, notes on notes on field work, and notes and comments on tutorial seminars plus long excerpts from students' essays, a stray paper in a learned journal summarizing the core of the book, comments piled on comments and a web of self-references, literary criticisms, and pieces of poetry, plus a rich scholarly apparatus.

Synopsis From the Pews in the Back by : Kate Dugan
From the Pews in the Back is a book filled with questions about Catholic identity. How do young Catholic women see or define themselves? What is their relationship to the church? What are their struggles and joys? In a church that often consigns them to the pews in the back, what place are young women claiming? This collection of twenty-nine essays approaches these questions from a multitude of angles. These brief memoirs, to 'her with the insights of editors Kate Dugan and Jennifer Owens, offer a glimpse into what it means to be young, Catholic, and female in today's church. These women wrestle with the Catholic faith and with the church. They ask hard questions of the institution and are not willing to take easy answers. From the Pews in the Back is a new chapter in the dialogue about the role of women in the church. The voices of these women range from inspiring and energetic to challenging and wounded. Ultimately, though these women are stubbornly hopeful. They are claiming a place in the church and are calling other Catholics to talk with them about this claim.
