Synopsis Muslim-Christian Relations and Inter-Christian Rivalries in the Middle East by : John Joseph
This study focuses on the Jacobites (Syrian Orthodox Christians), who, like their Aramaean ancestors, established a presence far beyond their ancestral lands. Professor John Joseph has found this historic Christian community to be an admirable case study in inter-communal relations in the Middle East. Of special interest is the discussion of how Western religious rivalries, Catholic and Protestant, have affected the religious tensions in the Middle East. Through Joseph's first-hand acquaintance with the region and mastery of previously unmined sources, he displays an intimate and thorough knowledge of his subject. Written with color, clarity, and extreme care, the book offers an objective recounting of a story that is at times full of passion and violence.

Synopsis Syrian-Kurdish Intersections in the Ottoman Period by : Stéfan Winter
Syrian-Kurdish Intersections in the Ottoman Period is a collection of essays on different aspects of the history of the Kurdish people in Syria under the Ottoman Empire, by specialists from Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Syria, Turkey, and the United States. The book explores the junctures and crossings of Kurdish lives, Syrian geography in the broadest terms, and the Ottoman rule. The contributors draw on new research in Ottoman Turkish and Arabic, and a range of other archival and narrative sources to examine the history of Kurdish settlement in Syria, including Ottoman sedentarization policies, Kurdish notable families, trade, landowning, Kurdish-Bedouin relations, Kurdish-Ottoman civil servants, Sufism, and nineteenth-century state reforms. Syrian-Kurdish Intersections in the Ottoman Period traces a social, political, economic, and religious history across nearly 400 years.

Synopsis A History of Eastern Christianity by : Aziz S. Atiya
A History of Eastern Christianity (1968) is a scholarly and comprehensive account of the history of the non-Greek churches of Eastern Christendom. Alexandrine and Antiochian Christianity, with their ramifications in Africa and Asia, are the subjects of an overall survey that ranges from their origins to modern times. The author deals with every Eastern Church, Coptic, Ethiopian, Jacobite, Nestorian, Armenian, Indian and Maronite, as well as the vanished churches of Nubia and North Africa. He gives a preliminary outline of each church, followed by an analytical summary of the faith and culture. He deals not only with the hierarchy, rites, ceremonials and monastic rule, but also with music, art, architecture and literature.

Synopsis Church Architecture of Late Antique Northern Mesopotamia by : Elif Keser Kayaalp
Church Architecture of Late Antique Northern Mesopotamia examines the church architecture of Northern Mesopotamia between the fourth and eighth centuries. Keser Kayaalp focuses on settlements, plan types, artistic encounters, the remarkable continuity of the classical tradition in the architectural decoration, the heterogeneity of the building techniques, patrons, imperial motivations, dedications of churches, and stories that claim and make spaces. Employing archaeological and epigraphical material and hagiographical and historical sources, she presents a holistic picture of the church architecture of this frontier region, encompassing the cities of Nisibis (Nusaybin), Edessa (,Sanliurfa), Amida (Diyarbakir), Anastasiopolis (Dara/Oğuz), Martyropolis (Silvan), Constantia (Viranşehir), and their surroundings, and the rural Tur Abdin region. The period covered spans the last centuries of Byzantine and the first century and a half of Arab rule, when the region was, on the one hand, a stage of war and riven by religious controversies, and a cultural interspace on the other. Keser Kayaalp discusses the different dynamics in this frontier region and the resulting built environment and church architecture in pursuit of providing a regional contribution to the study of the transformation that the Byzantine civilization underwent in the late antique period and understanding the continuities and changes after the Arab conquest.
