Synopsis SimWars Simulation Case Book: Emergency Medicine by : Lisa Jacobson
The SimWars Simulation Case Book: Emergency Medicine enables novice simulation operators to quickly and effectively run simulation cases, which have been established at national SimWars events, for their respective programs and departments. The use of simulation to gain and maintain skills in healthcare has become critical to the delivery of the curricula in medical schools, nursing schools, residency programs, and hospital-based practice. Specialty boards, such as the American Board of Anesthesiology, now require simulation training as part of the Maintenance of Certification. Studies have shown that one of the main barriers to implementing simulation is the lack of trained simulation instructors and instructor time. Developed by leading emergency medicine simulation experts, this definitive collection of 46 cases includes topics intended to supplement UME and GME training, meet ACGME core competency requirements, and challenge the expert emergency physician in critical decision-making, procedural skills, ethical issues, teamwork and communication skills.

Synopsis Simulation in Acute Neurology by : Sara E. Hocker
Simulation in Acute Neurology is a reference on the execution of a simulation-based educational program in the management of acute neurologic emergencies. Simulation in Acute Neurology has practical value because it contains detailed descriptions of our simulation scenarios. The foundation of this book is our experience with neurosimulation―and it has been a very good one Part I provides an overview of the principles of simulation in medicine and examines the many unique opportunities simulation provides as an educational tool. Barriers to simulating neurologic emergencies are also discussed. Simulation allows a physician-in-training to be observed directly as he or she evaluates and manages acute neurologic disease. Part II is the core of the book. Fifteen acute neurologic emergencies, including complex neuroethical quandaries, are presented in detail, step by step, decision by decision, error after error. Each chapter in this section starts with an explanation of the essence of the discussed neuroemergency (THE PROBLEM BEFORE US), followed by a description of the scenario itself (THE PRESENTING CLINICAL PROBLEM), how scenarios can be adjusted to different types of learners (ADAPTING THE SCENARIO), and ends with a discussion of topics for feedback, which are generally focused around errors and pitfalls (DEBRIEFING). To show the flow of scenarios, we created two additional main headings: (THE IDEAL LEARNER) and (THE NOT-SO IDEAL LEARNER).

Synopsis Emergency Medicine Simulation Workbook by : Traci L. Thoureen
Medical simulation has been a transformative force in medical education. Through the use of increasingly sophisticated technology, we are now able to simulate everything from yearly family doctor visits and simple procedures to complex operations such as heart surgery. Now more than ever, simulation is an essential tool for delivering the highest quality training, and it can be particularly valuable to physicians who teach in the acute care setting, where it is not always possible or practical to allow students to learn by working directly with patients. This book is written and designed specifically to guide medical educators in emergency medicine on how to integrate medical simulation into their teaching and achieve optimal results. Inside you’ll find: • Clinical cases drawn from faculty at major teaching centers, formatted and annotated so that they can be tailored to novice or advanced learners and easily deployed in a diverse range of settings. • Cases that cover the full spectrum of EM pathology. • Valuable ‘tips or tricks’ accompanying images and patient data. • A Companion Website including imaging and laboratory results pertinent to each case study – presented in Powerpoint format for easy download; video clips to simulate sonogram results. An invaluable new resource for training emergency physicians, nurses, and EMTs/paramedics, Emergency Medicine Simulation Workbook: A Tool for Bringing the Curriculum to Life provides a roadmap to the unique educational benefits of medical simulation along with a wealth of material educators can adapt for use in their own teaching and assessment portfolios.

Synopsis Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Emergency Medicine by : Christopher Strother
This is a practical guide to the use of simulation in emergency medicine training and evaluation. It covers scenario building, debriefing, and feedback, and it discusses the use of simulation for different purposes, including education, crisis resource management and interdisciplinary team training. Divided into five sections, the book begins with the historical foundations of emergency medicine, as well as education and learning theory. In order to effectively relay different simulation modalities and technologies, subsequent chapters feature an extensive number of practical scenarios to allow readers to build a curriculum. These simulations include pediatric emergency medicine, trauma, disaster medicine, and ultrasound. Chapters are also organized to meet the needs of readers who are in different stages of their education, ranging from undergraduate students to medical directors. The book then concludes with a discussion on the future and projected developments of simulation training. Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Emergency Medicine is an invaluable resource for a variety of learners, from medical students, residents, and practicing emergency physicians to emergency medical technicians, and health-related professionals.
