Synopsis Sight Reading for Strings - Violin by : Denise Willey

Sight Reading for Strings includes 115 studies in duet form, student and teacher for sight reading work at the lesson, ranging from open strings with quarter notes to complex rhythms in 14 different keys and several meters, some position work and double stops. Teacher plays with the student the first time, and on the repeat s/he plays the teacher's part and leaves the student to hold his own on the student part. Once the student has finished the book, he starts it over and plays the teacher's part all the way through the book.Teachers will appreciate the Wohlfhart duet etudes, which are extremely musical, but never familiar, so the student cannot play by ear as he is reading, as well as the broad range of musical signs not usually found in solo repertoire, including measure repeat signs, repetitive rhythm shorthand, and Italian terms, e.g., sul ponticello, con & senza sordino, col legno, sotto voce, and scores of others, D.C, D.S, Coda, and tempo and articulation terms and signs. Students should begin SRS once they have completed about 15-20 lessons in the Primer exercises or as recommended by their teacher, and continue after they finish the Primer, on through the Advanced Etudes and Advanced Rhythms.

Synopsis Sight Reading Violin Music by : Keith Cook

“I can play, but I can’t read music!” The answer to this frustrated cry is right here. “Sight Reading Violin Music” lets you use your ear to get started. Then, you will use symbols along with your ear in the speed builders. Finally, you will use only the symbols to ‘figure out’ the short pieces in each key. You will cover the major keys through four accidentals (sharps and flats). You will know the difference between major and minor. “It all looks like chicken scratch to me!” No problem. Use the finger charts and diagrams first. Or try the single-line staff; get someone to help write out some other songs you know in single-line notation. “My Twinkle beginners get the parts of the song mixed up; then, they forget where they are in the song.” This little snafu is universal. Use the icon cards in the appendix. The “B” section of Twinkle is shaded. This gives the young student a much needed picture of the ABA form.

Synopsis Elementary Training for Musicians by : Paul Hindemith

Originally published in the 1940s, Paul Hindemith's remarkable textbooks are still the outstanding works of their kind. In contrast to many musical textbooks written by academic musicians, these were produced by a man who could play every instrument of the orchestra, could compose a satisfying piece for almost every kind of ensemble, and who was one of the most stimulating teachers of his day. It is therefore not surprising that nearly forty years later these books should remain essential reading for the student and the professional musician.
