Do you know how many specifications deal with stability design of metal structures? Do you know which provisions are the same, which are different, & why they are different? Do you know which specifications use allowable stress design & which use Limit States Design (or LFRD)? At your fingertips you will find all the major specifications of the world, an indication of some of their differences, & some of the reasons why these differences exist. Geographical regions covered - Australia, China, Eastern Europe, Japan, North America & Western Europe. Topics covered - Compression Members; Built-Up Members; Beams; Plate & Box Girders; Beam-Columns; Frames; Arches; Triangulated Structures; Tubular Structures; Shells; Cold-formed Members; Composite Members; Earthquakes; & General Provisions & Design Requirements. This book is a 940 page comprehensive world-wide study of over 100 specifications & codes on stability design of metal structures. It is the only book in the world which evaluates specifications & codes, compares & contrasts them & explores some of the major reasons for their differences. Synopsis Biaxial Nematic Liquid Crystals by : Geoffrey R. Luckhurst

In the nematic liquid crystal phase, rod-shaped molecules move randomly but remain essentially parallel to one another. Biaxial nematics, which were first predicted in 1970 by Marvin Freiser, have their molecules differentially oriented along two axes. They have the potential to create displays with fast switching times and may have applications in thin-film displays and other liquid crystal technologies. This book is the first to be concerned solely with biaxial nematic liquid crystals, both lyotropic and thermotropic, formed by low molar mass as well as polymeric systems. It opens with a general introduction to the biaxial nematic phase and covers: • Order parameters and distribution functions • Molecular field theory • Theories for hard biaxial particles • Computer simulation of biaxial nematics • Alignment of the phase • Display applications • Characterisation and identification • Lyotropic, thermotropic and colloidal systems together with material design With a consistent, coherent and pedagogical approach, this book brings together theory, simulations and experimental studies; it includes contributions from some of the leading figures in the field. It is relevant to students and researchers as well as to industry professionals working in soft matter, liquid crystals, liquid crystal devices and their applications throughout materials science, chemistry, physics, mathematics and display engineering.

Synopsis Nonlinear Cooperative Phenomena In Biological Systems - Proceedings Of The Adriatico Research Conference by : Leif Matsson

This textbook, pitched at the advanced-undergraduate to beginning-graduate level, focuses on mathematical topics of relevance in contemporary physics that are not usually covered in texts at the same level. Its main purpose is to help students appreciate and take advantage of the modern trend of very productive symbiosis between physics and mathematics. Three major areas are covered: (1) linear operators; (2) group representations and Lie algebra representations; (3) topology and differential geometry. The following are noteworthy features of this book: the style of exposition is a fusion of those common in the standard physics and mathematics literatures; the level of exposition varies from quite elementary to moderately advanced, so that the book is of interest to a wide audience; despite the diversity of the topics covered, there is a strong degree of thematic unity; much care is devoted to detailed cross-referencing so that, from any part of the book, the reader can trace easily where specific concepts or techniques are introduced.

Synopsis Principles and Labs for Deep Learning by : Shih-Chia Huang

Principles and Labs for Deep Learning provides the knowledge and techniques needed to help readers design and develop deep learning models. Deep Learning techniques are introduced through theory, comprehensively illustrated, explained through the TensorFlow source code examples, and analyzed through the visualization of results. The structured methods and labs provided by Dr. Huang and Dr. Le enable readers to become proficient in TensorFlow to build deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) through custom APIs, high-level Keras APIs, Keras Applications, and TensorFlow Hub. Each chapter has one corresponding Lab with step-by-step instruction to help the reader practice and accomplish a specific learning outcome. Deep Learning has been successfully applied in diverse fields such as computer vision, audio processing, robotics, natural language processing, bioinformatics and chemistry. Because of the huge scope of knowledge in Deep Learning, a lot of time is required to understand and deploy useful, working applications, hence the importance of this new resource. Both theory lessons and experiments are included in each chapter to introduce the techniques and provide source code examples to practice using them. All Labs for this book are placed on GitHub to facilitate the download. The book is written based on the assumption that the reader knows basic Python for programming and basic Machine Learning. Introduces readers to the usefulness of neural networks and Deep Learning methods Provides readers with in-depth understanding of the architecture and operation of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks Demonstrates the visualization needed for designing neural networks Provides readers with an in-depth understanding of regression problems, binary classification problems, multi-category classification problems, Variational Auto-Encoder, Generative Adversarial Network, and Object detection

Synopsis Communities in Transition by : Søren Dietz

Communities in Transition brings together scholars from different countries and backgrounds united by a common interest in the transition between the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age in the lands around the Aegean. Neolithic community was transformed, in some places incrementally and in others rapidly, during the 5th and 4th millennia BC into one that we would commonly associate with the Bronze Age. Many different names have been assigned to this period: Final Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Eneolithic, Late Neolithic [I]-II, Copper Age which, to some extent, reflects the diversity of archaeological evidence from varied geographical regions. During this long heterogeneous period developments occurred that led to significant changes in material culture, the use of space, the adoption of metallurgical practices, establishment of far-reaching interaction and exchange networks, and increased social complexity. The 5th to 4th millennium BC transition is one of inclusions, entanglements, connectivity, and exchange of ideas, raw materials, finished products and, quite possibly, worldviews and belief systems. Most of the papers presented here are multifaceted and complex in that they do not deal with only one topic or narrowly focus on a single line of reasoning or dataset. Arranged geographically they explore a series of key themes: Chronology, cultural affinities, and synchronization in material culture; changing social structure and economy; inter- and intra-site space use and settlement patterns, caves and include both site reports and regional studies. This volume presents a tour de force examination of many multifaceted aspects of the social, cultural, technological, economic and ideological transformations that mark the transition from Neolithic to Early Bronze Age societies in the lands around the Aegean during the 5th and 4th millennium BC.
