Bullying and Sexual Harassment provides practical guidance on how to recognise and reduce bullying and harassment. It explains and advises on what steps a manager should take when they first become aware of such problems and how to be pro-active rather than reactive. It is written in an easy to follow, friendly style especially designed for use by those having to grapple with such a difficult and sensitive area. It addresses such issues as: why does it seem so hard to deal with it? When does friendliness or banter become sexual harassment? When does firm management become bullying? How do you recognise bullying in the workplace? How should you deal with complaints of bullying or harassment and what are the pitfalls? The book is considered in the context of the situation in the UK and British case law. - Covers how to recognise signs of bullying and sexual harassment - The potential consequences of not dealing with allegations of bullying and sexual harassment, including legal action, impact on morale, absenteeism, productivity and reputation - Guidance on writing and developing formal policies and procedures to deal with allegations of bullying and harassment

Synopsis Sexual Harassment and Bullying by : Susan Strauss
Bullying in schools is often discussed, but sexual harassment in schools, and how it differs from bullying is often overlooked. In fact, though, sexual harassment (committed both by fellow students and school personnel) is more common and yet more easily and quickly dismissed by those involved, though its consequences for the victim can be profound. This book provides parents, teachers, school officials, and others with a framework comparing and contrasting sexual harassment and bullying as they relate to the behavior, laws, and impact on children. The author describes the responsibility of the school district and how parents and other adults can navigate the schools' policies, barriers, and responsibilities. She argues that children should not be subjected to bullying OR sexual harassment, that it is the school's responsibility to make the harassment or bullying stop, and that parents and other caring adults often need to be involved and advocate for the child, even against resistance from those in the school system. Throughout the book the author uses examples of actual cases that have made it to the courts and have been precedent setting and cases in which she has been involved as an expert witness or as a consultant. Resources for readers are also provided at the end of the book.

Synopsis Sexual Harassment of Women by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Synopsis Handbook of Research on Bullying in Media and Beyond by : Sar?, Gül?ah
Bullying has been an issue for generations across fields and industries and can affect children as well as adults. With the rise of social media in recent years, bullying has evolved to include new forms such as cyberbullying and peer bullying. In the past, victims were able to escape their bullies in safe places, such as their homes. Nowadays, with technology keeping society constantly connected, bullies are able to exert their influence at all times. This is taking a far greater mental toll on bullied adults and children leading to burnout in the workplace, stress, anxiety, depression, and more. To understand and develop possible solutions to prevent bullying, further study is required. The Handbook of Research on Bullying in Media and Beyond considers the various forms of bullying and analyzes their representation in the media. The book also discusses the evolution of bullying throughout the years and how media and technology have played a key role in the changing landscape. Covering topics such as body image, peer bullying, social media, and violence, this major reference work is ideal for policymakers, computer scientists, psychologists, counselors, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Synopsis Thinking about Sexual Harassment by : Margaret A. Crouch
This illuminating work on one of today's most provocative issues provides all the necessary information for careful, critical thinking about the concept of sexual harassment. Consisting mainly of two parts, it first traces the construction of the concept of sexual harassment from the original public uses of the term to its definitions in the law, in legal cases, and in empirical research. It then analyzes philosophical definitions of sexual harassment and a number of issues that have arisen in the law, including the reasonable woman standard and whether same-sex harassment should be considered sex discrimination. Sure to spark intense discussion, this book explains a complex notion in a lucid and engaging manner appropriate for anyone broadly curious about the notion of sexual harassment.
