Synopsis Christians under Covers by : Kelsy Burke
Christians under Covers shifts how scholars and popular media talk about religious conservatives and sex. Moving away from debates over homosexuality, premarital sex, and other perceived sexual sins, Kelsy Burke examines Christian sexuality websites to show how some evangelical Christians use digital media to promote the idea that God wants married, heterosexual couples to have satisfying sex lives. These evangelicals maintain their religious beliefs while incorporating feminist and queer language into their talk of sexuality—encouraging sexual knowledge, emphasizing women’s pleasure, and justifying marginal sexual practices within Christian marriages. This illuminating ethnography complicates the boundaries between normal and subversive, empowered and oppressed, and sacred and profane.

Synopsis Sexually Woke by : Susan Hardwick-Smith
What if it were possible to have the best sex of your life at 40, or even 70? With over twenty years of experience as a highly regarded physician and founder of the largest all-female-staffed OB/GYN practice in the nation, Dr. Susan Hartwick-Smith, also known as Dr. Susan, presents Sexually Woke, a surprisingly frank and thought-provoking look at midlife sexuality. This optimistic new perspective is based not only on wisdom gained from sharing intimate stories with thousands of patients, but also on her own very candid journey as a menopausal woman navigating life post-divorce. Through a unique and comprehensive research study and subsequent interviews, Dr. Susan outlines the misconception and conditioning around our attitudes to mature sex and shares the intimate secrets of a cohort of women who have discovered the path to a vibrant, deeply connected and intimated sex life after 40. These women are the mysterious "Sexually Woke", and their surprising secrets are now available to all of us. Through her own story, as well as the raw and uncensored interviews with study participants that include the "Sexually Woke", Dr. Susan re-frames the second half of life as an open field of possibility in which to play, explore, and finally be your true self. While openly discussing our tremendous struggles-with kids, aging parents, changing careers, divorce, death, abuse, sexual trauma, and personal illness-she teaches us that the wisdom of midlife allows us to look inward in order to recognize the importance of sex in making our lives whole. A reawakened sex life, an essential step towards living life to its fullest, is no longer the secret knowledge of a few outliers. The path to deep sexual connection and satisfaction in midlife and beyond is available to anyone who is ready to commit and willing to embark on the journey with Dr. Susan and Sexually Woke.

Synopsis The Awakening by : Kate Chopin
In late 19th-century New Orleans, social constraints are strict, especially for a married woman. Edna Pontellier leads a secure life with her husband and two children, but her restlessness grows within the confined societal norms, and the expectations placed upon her – from her husband and the world around her – create increasing pressure. During a trip to Grand Isle, an island off the coast of Louisiana, her life is turned upside down by an intense love affair, and passion forces her to question the foundations of her – and every woman’s – existence. Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening caused a scandal with its outspokenness when it was published in 1899. The novel’s openly sexual themes and disregard for marital and societal conventions led to it not being reprinted for fifty years. It wasn't until the 1950s that Chopin’s work was rediscovered, and The Awakening received significant acclaim. Today, it is not only seen as an early feminist milestone but also as a classic. KATE CHOPIN [1851–1904] was born in St Louis. She had six children during her marriage, and it wasn't until after her husband's death in 1882 that she emerged as a writer. She published short stories in magazines such as Vogue and The Atlantic, gaining appreciation and recognition for her depictions of the American South. However, she was also criticized for her disregard for social traditions and racial barriers.

Synopsis Full Service by : Scotty Bowers
The wholesome image of America propagated by Hollywood in the 1940s, '50s and '60s is one of the most persistent in popular culture: loving wives, smiling children. But off the set, many of the actors who helped create this image were secretly leading very wild lives, and one man in particular was helping them: Scotty Bowers. At a time when sex outside of marriage was taboo, Scotty built up a reputation as the guy who could discreetly fix you up. Scotty slept with many stars himself, and connected others with his friends. Here, he tells his story for the first time. Scotty came to Hollywood after serving in the Marines in World War II, and began working at a gas station on Hollywood Boulevard. One day, he was approached and picked up by actor Walter Pidgeon, who whisked him off to a friend's villa for the first of many encounters with Hollywood's rich and famous. He developed long-term friendships with stars like Katharine Hepburn and Noel Coward, but he always kept it quiet--until he now provides a lost chapter in the history of the sexual revolution.--From publisher description.

Synopsis Selves, Symbols, and Sexualities by : Thomas S. Weinberg
Offering an anthology of original articles on sexuality from a sociological perspective, Selves, Symbols, and Sexualities: An Interactionist Anthology focuses on the diverse and multi-layered meanings of sexuality, sexual behaviors and sexual identities. Thomas S. Weinberg and Staci Newmahr bring you essays that explore sexuality as a social process. As a whole, the book takes the perspective that what each of us understands to be sexual is constructed through everyday social processes and interaction, situated in particular spaces and moments, identified through our social-sexual presentations, and symbolized through language, objects and practices. The book is organized around these four distinct but interrelated processes, and augmented by personal narratives around relevant issues. The authors’ goals for the book are to engage students in the sociological enterprise by providing interesting and insightful entries that emphasize the importance of meaning-making in human sexuality, and to provide them with conceptual tools to understand human sexuality in a complex and quickly changing sexual landscape.
