Synopsis The Essential Plotinus by : Plotinus
'The Essential Plotinus is a lifesaver. For many years my students in Greek and Roman Religion have depended on it to understand the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The translation is crisp and clear, and the excerpts are just right for an introduction to Plotionus's many-layered view of the world and humankind's place in it' - F. E. Romer, University of Arizona

Synopsis Plotinus on Eudaimonia by : Kieran McGroarty
"This is the first full-length commentary on Plotinus' Ennead I.4 (46), a work written at a late stage in Plotinus' life when he was suffering from an illness that was shortly to prove fatal. The main concern of Ennead I.4 (46) is the good man and his pursuit of the good life. The treatise is therefore central to our understanding of Plotinus' ethical theory, and Kieran McGroarty's commentary seeks to explicate and elucidate it from a philosophical standpoint. The author's own English translation is printed on pages facing the Greek text (the editio minor of P. Henry and H. R. Schwyzer). Each chapter of the commentary begins with a short summary of the content followed by detailed discussion of paragraphs, lines, and, where necessary, individual words. McGroarty explains the structure of Plotinus' argument and identifies the sources he uses and critiques. The commentary confirms what Porphyry notes in his Life of Plotinus, that the Enneads are indeed full of hidden Stoic and Peripatetic doctrines. Appendices contain discussions of Plotinus' view on suicide, and his use of St. Ambrose's sermon On Jacob and the Good Life."--BOOK JACKET.

Synopsis PLOTINUS Ennead VI.4 & VI.5 by : Eyjolfur Strange Emilsson, Steven
Ennead VI.4-5, originally written as a single treatise, contains Plotinus' most general and sustained exposition of the relationship between the intelligible and the sensible realms, addressing and coalescing two central issues in Platonism: the nature of the soul-body relationship and the nature of participation. Its main question is, How can soul animate bodies without sharing their extension? The treatise seems to have had considerable impact: it is much reflected in Porphyry's important work, Sententiae, and the doctrine of reception according to the capacity of the recipient, for which this treatise is the main source, resonated in medieval thinkers.

Synopsis Plotinus by : Dominic J. O'Meara
This is the ideal introduction to the thought of the third-century AD writer Plotinus, one of the greatest of ancient philosophers, now enjoying a major revival of interest. Dominic O'Meara has tailored the book carefully to the requirements of students: he writes clearly and authoritatively, assumes no knowledge of Greek or expertise in ancient philosophy, stays close to the texts, and relates Plotinus's ideas to modern philosophical concerns.

Synopsis ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Baġdādī’s Philosophical Journey by : Cecilia Martini Bonadeo
Although the philosopher ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Baġdādī (1162 -1231) received an extensive education in the thought of Avicenna, he still journeyed long in search of true philosophy. It was in Cairo that he finally discovered a model of philosophical metaphysics rooted in Greek thought as set out in Kindian and Farabian writings. This volume is devoted to the study of Aristotle’s Metaphysics and other Greek metaphysical writing gathered together by this Muslim philosopher to form a ‘Metaphysical Science’ in his Book of the Science of Metaphysics (Kitāb fī ʿilm mā baʿd al-ṭabīʿa).

Synopsis Enneads by : Plotinus
Plotinus (204/5-270 CE) was the first and greatest of Neoplatonic philosophers. His writings were edited by his disciple Porphyry, who published them many years after his master's death in six sets of nine treatises each (the Enneads). Plotinus regarded Plato as his master, and his own philosophy is a profoundly original development of the Platonism of the first two centuries of the Christian era and the closely related thought of the Neopythagoreans, with some influences from Aristotle and his followers and the Stoics, whose writings he knew well but used critically. He is a unique combination of mystic and Hellenic rationalist. His thought dominated later Greek philosophy and influenced both Christians and Moslems, and is still alive today because of its union of rationality and intense religious experience. In his acclaimed edition of Plotinus, Armstrong provides excellent introductions to each treatise. His invaluable notes explain obscure passages and give reference to parallels in Plotinus and others.

Synopsis Powers by : Julia Jorati
"This volume examines some of the main twists and turns in the fascinating history of the philosophical concept of powers or dispositions. It focuses on what one might call the metaphysical sense of 'powers'-that is, the powers that are invoked in the explanation of natural changes and activities. The volume's chapters discuss, among others, the philosophical views of Anaxagoras, Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics, Plotinus, Ibn Gabirol, Avicenna, Abelard, Anselm, Henry of Ghent, John Duns Scotus, René Descartes, Nicolas Malebranche, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Margaret Cavendish, Ralph Cudworth, Henry More, John Locke, David Hume, Thomas Reid, Mary Shepherd, Immanuel Kant, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, David Lewis, David Armstrong, and George Molnar. In addition, the volume contains four short reflection essays that examine the concept of powers from the perspective of disciplines other than philosophy, namely, history of music, West African religions, history of chemistry, and history of art"--
