Synopsis Selections from Justine and Short Histories, Stories and Fables by the Marquis de Sade by : Marquis De Sade

The libertine philosophy of the notorious Marquis de Sade, one of the most infamous and hated men in all of history, gave birth to the classic story of Justine, or "The Misfortunes of Virtue," a tale replete with brutal tragedy befalling the seemingly cursed existence of a pure, chaste, and virtuous girl. The cynical Sade uses this immorality play to expound upon his philosophy of Darwinian struggle and nihilistic moral futility. His rakish, bawdy, and bizarre short "histories" also give to the reader a taste of the venomous and troubled imaginings of this exceptional, deranged mind; while, revealing a comic and grotesque, even child-like side to the Divine Marquis that many may not have ever been aware of. A wonderful collection of his writings for those just beginning to explore this mad, controversial, and thoroughly brilliant man of letters. Published by Zem Books.

Synopsis The Misfortunes of Virtue and Other Early Tales by : Marquis de Sade

The name of the Marquis de Sade is synonymous with the blackest corners of the human soul, a byword for all that is foulest in human conduct. In his bleak, claustrophobic universe, there is no God, no morality, no human affection, and no hope. Power is given to the strong, and the strong are murderers, torturers, and tyrants. No quarter is given; compassion is the virtue of the weak. Yet Sade was a man of savage intelligence who carried the philosophy of the French Enlightenment to its logical extreme. His writings effectively release the individual from all social and moral constraint: for many, Sade is the Great Libertarian. The Victorians considered him `Divine' and Apollinaire called him `the freest spirit'; the Surrealists recognised him as a founding father, and he is a key figure in the history of modernism and post-modernism. With Freud and Marx, Sade has been one of the crucial shaping influences on this century, and reactions to him continue to be extreme. But he has always been more talked about than read. This selection of his early writings, some making their first appearance in this new translation, reveals the full range of Sade's sobering moods and considerable talents. - ;Revered by Enlightenment and Victorian thinkers, de Sade was recognized as a founding father by the Surrealists, and holds a prominent place in the history of modernism and post-modernism. Synopsis Gothic Tales of the Marquis de Sade by : Margaret Crosland

A collection of de Sade's stories utilizing gothic conventions and questioning sexual and societal mores The notorious author of pornographic novels and a sexual pervert who spent much of his life in prison and whose name was unmentionable in civilized circles, only in recent times has the Marquis come to be seen as misunderstood—essentially a moralist, his exploration of the so-called dark side of the human psyche remains as relevant to our society as it was to his own. This collection will provide an excellent introduction to Sade’s fiction; these accessible stories range from the dramatic novellaEugenie de Franval, in which a father’s criminal passion for his daughter leads to intrigue, abduction, and murder, to comic tales such asThe Husband Who Plays Priest, concerning a lecherous monk who finds an ingenious way to combine clerical duties with secular pleasures. De Sade’s gift as a humorist are much in evidence, as is his particular delight in unusual marital situations—which invariably lead to the most diverting conclusions.

Synopsis JUSTINE - Sade by : Marquês de Sade

The work " Justine: The Misfortunes of Virtue" was produced by the Marquis de Sade in the year 1787. The initial milestone of Justine's misfortunes is the death of her father, the loss of the family fortune, and the attempts of the governess to lead her and her sister, Juliette, into a life outside the law. Juliette accepts the fate to which the governess points, but Justine's refusal leads her to flee. Throughout Justine's journey, spanning from the age of 12 to 26, vice proves inseparable from virtue, both as a result of the incessantly undertaken escape. At each stage, a mark is inflicted upon the protagonist, with the clergy, aristocracy, merchants, judiciary, wealthy, and powerful invariably appearing as actors in the circus of obscenities where the other is reduced to an object of their will. In the emblematic ending, where the Marquis de Sade illustrates his philosophy of life, the stories of the sisters intersect once again, prompting reflection from the reader.

Synopsis The Mystified Magistrate and Other Tales by : marquis de Sade

The great virtue of this volume is that it reveals a lighter, comic side of Sade. He was a man obsessed, like many great writers, and his obsessions are still present here: his hatred of all things pretentious, his loathing of a corrupt judicial system, his damning of hypocrisy and false piety. One of the great anarchists of all time, he was nevertheless far from mad (as many pretended) and these works of fiction shed still another light on this most feverish of minds. But however heavy the subject, The Mystified Magistrate is infused with a light touch; it is revealing but never offensive.
