Synopsis Selected Shorter Poems by : Edmund Spenser
Although known best for his sweeping allegorical epic "The Faerie Queen," Edmund Spenser wrote a number of other significant poems. His first major poetical work "The Shepherd's Calendar" begins this collection of his "Selected Shorter Poems." An emulation of Virgil's "Eclogues," "The Shepherd's Calendar" depicts the life of shepherd Colin Clout through the twelve months of his year. The twelve eclogues of the poem, each named after a different month, discuss abuses of the church, offer praise for Queen Elizabeth, and reveal the struggles of a lonely shepherd. Also included in this edition of Spenser's poetry are the following poems: "The Ruins of Time," "Prosopopoia," "Muiopotmos," "Colin Clout's Come Home Again," "Amoretti," and "Epithalamion."

Synopsis Beyond Silence by : Daniel Hoffman
Accepting an award for poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Daniel Hoffman wrote, "Amid private sufferings and outrage at the brutalities of public life, it is gaiety that sustains us, and love, and the imagination's power to create from both deprivation and delight." This collection embodies those emotions and that imaginative power. Hoffman's verse has always exulted in the resources of language, as sensuous in sound as in response to the natural world. Beyond Silence, to be published on Hoffman's eightieth birthday, presents his shorter poems culled from eight previous collections, plus several new poems. Here, rather than in chronological order, they appear thematically and invite the reader to partake of the pleasures that characterize this distinguished poet's verse: "clarity, grace where desired, accuracy of visual detail and dialogue, and a formal mastery so deft that playfulness comes easily" (Fred Chappell). Arriving at last. It has stumbled across the harshStones, the black marshes. True to itself, by what craftAnd strength it has, it has comeAs a sole survivor returns. From the steep pass.Carved on memory's staffThe legend is nearly decipherable. It has lived up to its vowsIf it enduresThe journey through the dark placesTo bear witness,Casting is messageIn a sort of singing. -- "The Poem"

Synopsis Blackbirds in September by : Jürgen Becker
Poetry. Translated from the German by Okla Elliott. "Jurgen Becker was born in 1932. His childhood, therefore, was the Second World War a disease from which he has been recovering ever since the fighting stopped. His poems do not presume to address the horrors directly, but with great courage he casts sidelong glances at things he remembers or the things that prompt such memories. These are important poems, not just about the war but about any unbearable catastrophe the scars of which last forever. Okla Elliott's scrupulous translations are faithful to the poems' nervous hurt: their appearance in English is a major event." David R. Slavitt"

Synopsis Gary Soto by : Gary Soto
Soto writes with a pure sweetness free of sentimentality that is almost extraordinary in modern American poetry. -- Andrew Hudgins. Soto insists on the possibility of a redemptive power, and he celebrates the heroic, quixotic capacity for survival in human beings and the natural world. -- Publishers Weekly. Soto has it all -- the learned craft, the intrinsic abilities with language, a fascinating autobiography, and the storyteller's ability to manipulate memories into folklore. -- Library Journal.

Synopsis Poems and Shorter Writings by : James Joyce
This collection brings together all the poems published by James Joyce in his lifetime, most notably Chamber Music and Pomes Penyeach. It also includes a large body of his satiric or humorous occasional verse, much of which is fugitive and little known to the general reader. In addition, the volume provides the text of the surviving prose Epiphanies, Giacomo Joyce - the fascinating Trieste notebook that Joyce compiled while finishing A Portrait of the Artist and beginning Ulysses, in which he first explored the world of his autobiographical novel.
