Synopsis Selected Papers of Donald Meltzer - Vol. 1 by : Donald Meltzer
The contents of the three volumes are grouped not chronologically but under the headings of 'Personality and Family Structure', 'Philosophy and History of Psychoanalysis', and 'The Psychoanalytic Process and the Analyst'. Together they present his interpretation of the 'Kleinian development' from Freud, through Abraham and Klein, to Bion and the post-Kleinian model; and within this evolution, his view of the natural history of the psychoanalytic process, the aesthetics of the method, and his insights into the operation of the transference and countertransference. Meltzer saw the psychoanalytic process as a new method that contributes alongside more traditional art-forms to our scientific knowledge of the mind. Working with both adults and children, he viewed psychoanalysis in developmental rather than narrowly therapeutic terms, with potential for both analyst and analysand. All his theories derived from clinical work, above all from dream-reading and children's phantasy play; and owing to his extensive international teaching experience, his own material was enriched by that of many supervisees. This collection of papers, read as a whole, invites new readers to follow and partake in what he called 'the most interesting conversation in the world'.

Synopsis Sincerity and Other Works by : Donald Meltzer
The author formulates here the existence of an anxiety apparatus whose functioning is a part of the ego and the personality structure and illustrates how in attacking this apparatus the ego is attacking itself. An example is given of the workings of the death instinct, and a differentiation is made between the ego's defence mechanisms and other pathological character devices.

Synopsis The Psycho-Analytical Process by : Donald Meltzer
The Psycho-Analytical Process started as a series of lecture-seminars to child psychotherapists shortly after the death of British psychoanalyst Melanie Klein in 1960. It is intended for the use of practicing analysts and as a contribution to a new and widespread interest in the analytical process. This book was published under the auspices of the Melanie Klein Trust. This book is organized into two main sections. Section I provides a vivid reference to the transactions of the consulting room and playroom in order to evoke in the reader the experience of being both a patient and analyst. Section II which deals with the analyst's task and functions and uses clinical material to illustrate aspects of psychoanalysis presented in Section I. This book will be of interest to student psychotherapists, students of child analysis, the analysts and students of the Argentinian Psycho-analytical Society and finally with a research seminar of student and graduate child analysts.

Synopsis The Poetry of the Word in Psychoanalysis by : Pere Folch Mateu
The Poetry of the Word in Psychoanalysis presents selected key papers by leading Spanish psychoanalyst Pere Folch Mateu. The pieces chosen for this book address clinical, psychopathological, technical and theoretical issues approached in Folch Mateu’s unique style, providing an introduction to his impressive output. Folch Mateu integrates a wide range of psychoanalytic sources – Freud, Klein and Bion, and French psychoanalysis – in approaching topics like the psychoanalytic process, obsessive modes of control, the pathology of the negative and intellectual inhibition. The author’s interest in exploring the interactions between the analyst and the patient in minute detail through the course of the psychoanalytic process is a key theme that emerges throughout, as is his devotion to the intersections between music, literature and psychoanalysis. The Poetry of the Word in Psychoanalysis will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training, particularly those wishing to explore the boundaries of psychoanalysis and the integration of different psychoanalytic approaches.

Synopsis Donald Meltzer by : Meg Harris Williams
In this intelligent and insightful work, Meg Harris Williams presents a clear and readable introduction to the works of influential psychoanalyst Donald Meltzer. The book covers Meltzer’s ideas on key themes including sexuality, dreams, psychosis, perversion and aesthetics, and his work with both children and adults. This book focuses especially on Meltzer’s views on the nature of psychoanalysis itself, as an investigative method conducted by the cooperation between two people. His intuitive understanding of dreams is underscored by a scholarly interest in philosophy and linguistics. The book will give readers a window into Meltzer’s clinical seminars and supervisions, as well as a comprehensive overview of his published work, all thoughtfully brought together by someone who worked with Meltzer for many years. Bringing Meltzer’s ideas into contemporary context, this fresh approach to his work makes his rich and complex theories about our inner world accessible to all. Part of the Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis series, this book will be of great importance to psychoanalysts, clinicians and scholars familiar with Meltzer’s ideas, as well as those seeking an introduction to his work.

Synopsis Sexual States of Mind by : Donald Meltzer
A ground-breaking psychoanalytic study on sexuality which maintains its originality today, forty-five years after its first publication. The book is a revision of psychoanalytic theory, starting with the work of Freud himself and including Melanie Klein's contributions on the early Oedipus Complex and the Depressive Position. But more than that, it is a metapsychological study of sexuality which provides a different perspective from more well-known ones that relate simply to a descriptive or behavioural point of view. In differentiating adult sexuality from infantile sexuality and polymorphism and perversion, taking unconscious phantasy and the notion of the primal scene as the pivotal point, Meltzer proposes a unified theoretical and clinical model which has proved of particular help in the field of the psychopathology of addictions and perversions.
