Synopsis Selected Letters, 1514-1543 by : Maria Salviati De' Medici

The voluminous correspondence of Maria Salviati de' Medici. In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest in Maria Salviati de' Medici, specifically, in her role in Medici governance and her relationships with other members of the Medici court. Maria Salviati's surviving correspondence documents a life spent close to the centers of Medici power in Florence and Rome, giving witness to its failures, resurrection, and eventual triumph. Presented here for the first time in English, this book is a representative sample of Maria's surviving letters that document her remarkable life through a tumultuous period of Italian Renaissance history. While she earned the exasperation of some, she gained the respect of many more. Maria ended her life as an influential dowager, powerful intercessor for local Tuscans of all strata, and wise elder in Duke Cosimo I's court. The first critical, analytical, biographical work on Maria Salviati de' Medici's life and letter-writing in English.

Synopsis Andreas Vesalius of Brussels 1514 - 1664 by : C. D. O'Malley

The life of Vesalius, the foremost pioneer of modern anatomy, has never before been told in full. the present definitive biography, published in 1964 to mark the four-hundredth ear since Vesalius's death, fills a serious gap in medical history. It is, in fact, the first biography of the great anatomist since Moritz Roth's work of 1892. Much new information has come to light in the intervening seventy years which enables O'Malley to reassess Vesalius in relation to his eminent contemporaries and to re-evaluate his contributions to anatomy and to medical science in general. O'Malley gives a detailed account of Vesalius's studies of anatomy in Paris, Padua, Pisa, and Bologna, and is thus able to show the comparative advancement of medical knowledge throughout Europe during the sixteenth century. In addition, the book contains a wealth of historical material of broad interest, including an account of the attempt of Vesalius and Ambroise Pare to save the life of Henry II of France as he lay dying form a lance wound in the eye. Also included is a critical account of the various stories concerning Vesalius's persecution by the Inquisition and his subsequent pilgrimage to Jerusalem. As much as possible of Vesalius's major achievement, De humani corporis fabrica (1543), his epochal treatise on the structure of the human body, is presented in his own words, translated from the Latin text by Dr. O'Malley. Wherever feasible, in fact, an effort has been made by the author to tell the story through the precise words of Vesalius or those of his contemporaries. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1964.

Synopsis The Selected Letters of W.E. Henley by : Damian Atkinson

The text of the book consists of some 150 letters (out of a corpus of 2,500) written by the late nineteenth-century poet, critic, editor and journalist W.E. Henley, to various figures of the period, e.g. R.L. Stevenson, H. G. Wells, J.M. Barrie, William Archer, Rodin, Wilde, Kipling, Arthur Morrison, Alice Meynell, and Edmund Gosse. Letters are also included to other figures within Henley’s immediate circle, his wife Anna, his financial backer Fitzroy Bell, Charles Baxter the arbitrator in the quarrel between Henley and Stevenson, and his Edinburgh art collector friend Hamilton Bruce. Each letter is fully annotated. An introduction places Henley within the period and provides a biographical account of his life and literary work which is reflected in his letters. Of particular importance is the role of Henley as editor of London, the Magazine of Art, the Scots Observer and later the National Observer and the New Review.
