Synopsis Second Helpings at the Serve You Right Café by :

Day One: As Eden Rose and her new employee, Emet, work at the Serve You Right Café, Emet says he has a date tonight--his first in almost a decade. He has not told the date his secret. After closing, he and Eden go to the park across the street to meet with Isadore and Daisy, an elderly street magician couple, who congratulate Emet on his upcoming date. When Emet meets Mercedes ("Mercey"), his date, she tells him that she trains a therapy dog who lives during the week in a prison. Emet grows silent. He walks her home, and her manner changes as she realizes her brother is there. She has an absentee father, a toxic mother, and a stoner brother. She will move out on soon. Emet admits he is on parole after nine and a half years in prison for manslaughter. To his shock, Mercey asks to see him again and he leaves feeling joyful. In the house, Mercey discovers that her brother, Clay, has been eavesdropping and is determined to keep her from abandoning him by moving out. While she walks her dog, he steals her phone and pours salt into the dog's water.Day Two: Clay stomps over to Emet's apartment to beat him so Mercey will be cowed into staying home forever. When he reaches the building, a neighbor says Emet has left. Clay gets a second idea: he announces he is a heroin dealer and Emet is his customer; he asks the neighbor to let him in. The neighbor refuses, and Clay is forced to retreat. Upon arriving home he emails a friend and promises to "take care of that bastard for good." Safely at work, Emet has no idea of the mounting peril to his freedom and safety. The neighbor calls and tells Eden Rose about the incident. Emet panics: a false accusation could revoke his parole. He calls his parole officer, who immediately assumes he is engaged in criminal behavior.A new customer, Gene, enters the café. Someone stole his checkbook and wrote a bad check here. He buys food and drink for himself and others to make up for it.Mercey discovers the salted water and the fact that her phone is missing. She takes the dog to the vet, and the doctor reports the incident. The MSPCA sends officers to Clay's house. Seeing them, Clay flees and decides to dispose of Emet.Afraid to go home, Mercey spends the night with Eden Rose and learns of her painful past. She begs Eden Rose to help Clay.Day Three: Eden and Emet are at work. Gene walks in to finish paying his debt. Mercey comes to tell Emet she is moving that day. She leaves, and Clay arrives to fight Emet.Mercey discovers Clay's plan and runs back to the café to save Emet. Clay attacks her and Emet knocks him out--just as Eden Rose's friend the local cop comes in for his daily coffee. Emet has now committed a violent assault while on parole, and it seems all is lost.Epilogue: Two weeks later, Emet and Eden Rose sit in the park with Daisy and Isadore. Emet was re-incarcerated but an investigation cleared him. Eden Rose and the couple leave. Mercey joins Emet, and they discuss Clay, who is in jail. They walk away together.

Synopsis What We Have Seen and Heard by : Michael E. Connors

One of the chief challenges of the Second Vatican Council was to reclaim the meaning of baptism, especially as the foundation of service and mission in the world. Fifty years after the close of that watershed gathering, nineteen distinguished religious leaders and scholars reexamine that challenge and its implications for preaching and ministry today. This book reinvigorates an important conversation.

Synopsis Cat's Cafe by : Ralls C. Melotte

Catherine Stubin was already looking for a way out of strait-laced Louisville, Kentucky when a handsome, charismatic Irishman walked into her family’s Thanksgiving dinner party. She was thrilled at first sight. Alone, desolate, and weary of 1870s aristocracy, it was easy for Catherine to see Patrick Callaway as a gallant rescuer. He quickly swept her off her feet and onto a night train with promises of a grand adventure and new life in the West. Enthralled and excited by an impetuous elopement on the newly completed Transcontinental Railroad, she had no idea what really lay ahead, and would never have expected Patrick to disappear shortly after their arrival in the hardscrabble town of Eagle Rock. Far from the love story she’d expected, Catherine would have to find her place among boisterous cowboys, territorial ranchers, hard-living rail workers, stalwart Native Americans, and Mormon settlers. Calling on all the strength, determination, and ingenuity she could muster, she would either join real-life pioneers and visionaries in shaping the late-19th century American West, or return to a life she had come to despise. Chapter notes in each book of the Eagle Rock Trilogy provide the historical context and setting for the characters, culture, and such events as the introduction of irrigation canals so important to present Idaho’s economy, construction of the Union Pacific Railroad lines rife with scams and cutthroat skullduggery, and the early western Feminist movement — all of which did unfold in and around this small railroad town.
