Do you ever wonder if people know the meaning of the words they speak? When you hear someone say they saw a bad ride, do they mean they saw a broken-down vehicle? Maybe the roller coaster at the amusement park wasnt operational. If you say your alarm is going off, is it making some audible alert to wake you, or is it having a temper tantrum? How do I really know what you mean? Many factors go into determining the meaning of words and phrases communicated to the listener. Knowing this, when I hear someone say they got saved, if I dont know their understanding of the term, I have to wonder what they mean. Here I try to explore what people mean when they use this common phrase heard in the Baptist churches of the American South. It is a serious question with eternal consequences: What do you mean you got saved?

Through circumstances beyond our control, our family found ourselves in the Philippines in 1985. As a part of that circumstance we were going to have to share a house with another family, whom we did not know. The family was the Balitons, Mel and Ruth and at that time Willy was still living at home. How would this work? Two families, two different cultural backgrounds, and one house? Even people of the same cultural background have trouble living in the same place, but here we were, so—we were prepared to make the best of it until our visas could be straightened out for South Korea. Frankly, I don’t remember one time when there was a conflict. We had some trouble keeping our children out of “Aunt Ruth” and “Uncle Mel’s” (which our children now in their ’40s still call them) apartment area. But they knew they were always welcome. On numerous occasions we had the privilege of Filipino parties spilling out all over the house as Ruth’s good food was distributed and friends and family poured in. Because of the close proximity we were always treated as a part of the family, whatever the occasion. When moving day came, about a year later, and we went our separate ways as families, it was a day of sadness, a few tears were shed. During those days Mel was the Wesleyan Church’s National Treasurer, and I had the privilege of traveling all over Luzon with him on public transport. These were journeys of fellowship, sharing and learning from each other. It was a time blessed by the Lord as changes were coming into the Filipino Wesleyan Church. It was my privilege to have a very small part of that at the side of my friend and brother Mel Baliton. As I am sure you will see as his story unfolds, there is a kind firmness in all that Mel does. Once he knows what God wants, “that’s it then.” I have heard him say that often when he was sure of something. There will be good humor and kindness for the human weakness of others, but once the path is known, the path is not strayed from, and Ruth will be right beside him all the way. After years of avoiding volunteer organizations, Chicago high school teacher Tom Mason is finally guilted into volunteering a few hours a week at a local gay services clinic. Since he finds the bitter in-fighting at the organization to be intolerable, and the head of the clinic to be downright poisonous, Tom does his hours on early Saturday morning before anyone else arrives and avoids most of the office politics. But his quiet Saturday goes quickly awry when two gay teens, in a particularly difficult situation, seek him out for counseling early to avoid being seen by anyone else. After they leave, Tom decides to tidy up the cramped, disordered office and file some of the tettering piles that are practically everywhere. Filing turns out to be a surprisingly gruesome task, however, when in one of the filing cabinet drawers Tom finds the severed head of the director of the clinic. The director, called Snarly Bitch behind his back because of his unpleasant demeanor, had a particularly long enemies' list and Tom himself is not particularly choked up about his untimely demise. But with a long suspect list, a fairly indifferent police force, and the welfare of some of the clinic's youthful charges on the line, Tom himself must sort out the murder before an innocent takes the fall for this very unusual crime.
