My manuscript is a historical fiction novel. The story line follows a young Minnesota farm boy into the army after the outbreak of the war. It follows him through basic training, jump school, and then on into the war. The book covers the Normandy Invasionthe battle known as The Bridgeto far up into Holland and finally, the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout the book, I take the reader back to Minnesota so they may see how war affects family and friends on the home front. All the characters are fictional. However, all the military bases in the US and Europe are factual. Each battle my characters are involved in are accurate by timeline and locations. Anyone who is a student of the war or readers who love this genre should appreciate those facts. However, as the novel is a fictional work, I have taken literary license to add drama and hold-your-breath scenes throughout the story.

The heart of this book is the remarkable Civil War diary of the author’s great-grandfather, William Benjamin Gould, an escaped slave who served in the United States Navy from 1862 until the end of the war. The diary vividly records Gould’s activity as part of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia; his visits to New York and Boston; the pursuit to Nova Scotia of a hijacked Confederate cruiser; and service in European waters pursuing Confederate ships constructed in Great Britain and France. Gould’s diary is one of only three known diaries of African American sailors in the Civil War. It is distinguished not only by its details and eloquent tone (often deliberately understated and sardonic), but also by its reflections on war, on race, on race relations in the Navy, and on what African Americans might expect after the war. The book includes introductory chapters that establish the context of the diary narrative, an annotated version of the diary, a brief account of Gould’s life in Massachusetts after the war, and William B. The writings contained within chronicle the mental and spiritual journey that the author has undergone. Some of the poems reflect the struggles of post-traumatic stress, while others are more spiritual in nature. Although there are differences in subject matter, the author wrote the truth of what is in his heart and soul. As he began to turn back toward his faith, the author wrote more poems about spiritual matters. The need for the author to submit and lay his life in Gods hands became greater as the days went on. When submission came, it was while the author was writing a poem.

On August 14, 1945, Alfred Eisenstaedt took a picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, minutes after they heard of Japan's surrender to the United States. Two weeks later LIFE magazine published that image. It became one of the most famous WWII photographs in history (and the most celebrated photograph ever published in the world's dominant photo-journal), a cherished reminder of what it felt like for the war to finally be over. Everyone who saw the picture wanted to know more about the nurse and sailor, but Eisenstaedt had no information and a search for the mysterious couple's identity took on a dimension of its own. In 1979 Eisenstaedt thought he had found the long lost nurse. And as far as almost everyone could determine, he had. For the next thirty years Edith Shain was known as the woman in the photo of V-J DAY, 1945, TIMES SQUARE. In 1980 LIFE attempted to determine the sailor's identity. Many aging warriors stepped forward with claims, and experts weighed in to support one candidate over another. Chaos ensued. For almost two decades Lawrence Verria and George Galdorisi were intrigued by the controversy surrounding the identity of the two principals in Eisenstaedt's most famous photograph and collected evidence that began to shed light on this mystery.
