Synopsis Managing Confined Spaces in Construction by : James Rogers

There are many publications available related to confined spaces, however there are very few that are dedicated to the management of confined spaces in the construction industry. Even the ones that address construction tend to do so in the context of tank and silo construction, or retrofits at existing facilities where spaces are well defined and controlled. This book was designed to address the confined spaces that can be found on many typical construction sites. The ones that probably haven't been identified or classified yet because they didn't exist when the project started. The ones that get constructed without consideration of what work remains that needs to be done inside. The ones that many people in the construction industry do not recognize as confined spaces, such as manholes, catch basins, attics and pits. Both safety professionals and construction managers will find this book useful as it details the identification and management of these spaces and conditions. In May 2015, the United States Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued new rules for the Construction Industry that changed the way confined spaces must be managed on construction sites in the United States. This new set of regulations, known as 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA, formally introduces the concept of a Permit Required Confined Space to the construction industry and defines the conditions that mandate a formal and documented process that must be followed to enter these spaces. This book takes a common-sense approach to the management of these spaces on construction sites. It gives a detailed explanation of the OSHA rules and regulations and compares them to other regulatory texts including the Canadian standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines. Case studies are presented to illustrate both the importance and the complexities of managing confined spaces and confined space entries. Suggestions and examples are provided to assist construction companies with the development and implementation of a safety management program for confined spaces while discussing best practices versus regulatory minimum standards.Chapters include information on classifying confined spaces, communicating hazards to employees, training entry teams, establishing stand-by rescue plans, and the identification and avoidance of hazards commonly found in confined spaces on construction sites. Appendices include discussion on the use and maintenance of atmospheric testing equipment as well as the entire regulatory text contained in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA.

Synopsis Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health by : Charles D. Reese

Although the construction industry employs only five percent of the nation's work force, it suffers 20 percent of the nation's occupational fatalities and 12 percent of all U.S. injuries. Because of this the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has consolidated their construction standards, compliance assistance, cooperative programs, and technical services to form the Directorate of Construction. Construction sites and operations have become the prime targets for the Directorate of Construction, which has greatly increased its number of inspections, citations and penalties. The Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health is for safety professional, contractor, project manager and owner who has the responsibility of implementing an effective on-site safety and health program. These professionals are now in charge of everything from the safe operation of equipment to the safe removal of hazardous waste from the construction site. It is a practical guide that can be used by the construction industry on existing and future projects and jobsites in the critical area of occupational safety and health. Written using OSHA's Construction standards as a framework, the book provides those responsible for construction safety and health with a definitive guide for eliminating safety and health hazards from construction worksites. In addition, the handbook addresses subjects such as contractor liability, multi-employer sites and focused inspection which are real and time problem areas faced by the construction industry. The Handbook of OSHA Construction Safety and Health contains a model safety and health program, examples of accident analysis and prevention approaches, sample safety and health checklist and forms, and over 300 illustrations.

Synopsis Safety and Health in Confined Spaces by : Neil McManus

Safety and Health in Confined Spaces goes beyond all other resources currently available. International in scope, the 15 chapters and 10 appendices cover every facet of this important subject. A significant addition to the literature, this book provides a confined space focus to other health and safety concepts. Confined spaces differ from other workspaces because their boundary surfaces amplify the consequences of hazardous conditions. The relationship between the individual, the boundary surface, and the hazardous condition is the critical factor in the onset, outcome, and severity of accidents in these workspaces. The author uses information about causative and other factors from analysis of fatal accidents to develop a hazard assessment and hazard management system. He provides a detailed, disciplined protocol, covering 36 hazardous conditions, that addresses all segments of work--the undisturbed space, entry preparation, work activity, and emergency preparedness and response--and illustrates how to use it. Safety and Health in Confined Spaces gives you the tools you need for preventing and responding to accidents.
