Synopsis Rocky Mountain Life by : Rufus B. Sage

"Rocky Mountain Life" is a memoir of Rufus B. Sage, American writer, journalist, and mountain man who went on a three-year expedition in the Far West. Incited by a strong desire to explore the vast region beyond the Missouri frontier, Sage organized a party to explore the west. Despite the fact that his party was scarce, Sage ventured onwards and later joined a party of Indian traders. The book covers perilous adventures in the Far West and the life of fur trappers. It depicts many startling scenes during the expedition from 1841 to 1844.

Synopsis A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by : Isabella L. Bird

First published serially and then into a book in 1879, "A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains" is one of the many accounts of Isabella L. Bird's amazing travels and adventures. Born in Yorkshire, England in 1831, Bird was never formally educated and was often sickly as a child, but she was an avid reader and loved the outdoors. In 1854, at the age of twenty-two, she left a comfortable life in England for her first trip abroad to America. She fell in love with discovering new places and defied tradition while undertaking grand adventures as an unmarried woman. Bird went onto travel to Australia and Hawaii, while publishing several accounts of her experiences, before finding her way to Colorado. "A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains", her fourth publication and her most famous, contains the account of six months of her travels in 1873 through the rugged terrain of the Colorado Rockies. The book is based upon her colorful letters sent back home to her sister and the account relates the many hardships of the great western frontier, the unique characters she meets, and the incredible natural world she found in the newly settled western territories. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Synopsis Life in the Rocky Mountains by : Warren Angus Ferris

This memoir by adventurer Warren Angus Ferris offers an in-depth and first-hand tale of the Rocky Mountains and its neighboring rivers, as they were during the 1830s. Beginning with an enthusiastic cry of "Westward, Ho!," we are taken on a journey by Ferris, who proves a lively and thoroughly readable commentator. His adventures with the groups of hunters and traders are varied and numerous, and the tone of his writing does a fine job capturing the spirit of risk taking and excitement of venturing to the unknown which characterized the era. We receive descriptions of the rugged and sometimes breathtaking wilderness, the Native American tribes and their warriors and their leadership, and the trade of furs which drove a great part of the westward expansion. The many perils of the frontier wilderness, from fierce animals and bears, to thieves and bandits, to hostile groups of Native Americans, were all encountered by Ferris in his years navigating the great mountain ranges. Particular attention is given to the mighty chieftains of the Native American tribes, some of whom struck the fur traders and trappers with a sense of awe for their strong bearing. We also hear how the company would survive, often enduring hunger and bad weather by honing their survivalist techniques and skills at camping. In all, this memoir oozes authenticity, the narrative ranking among the most impressive of all the rocky mountain men. This edition includes several supplementary articles, written in the local press after this autobiography was first published in 1845. From these we gain an idea of how Americans of the era read and appreciated the insight wilderness explorers such as Ferris gave to those who were unfamiliar with the vast, untrammeled lands stretching across great swathes of the North American continent.
