Synopsis Romanian Notebook by : Cyrus Console
A diaristic exploration of procrastination, pregnancy, and art The day before Cyrus Console and his pregnant wife leave for a monthlong visit to Romania, they receive troubling news—the fetus she’s carrying is at elevated risk for Down syndrome. As the trip unfolds, his worry spirals into broader meditations on parenthood, language, addiction, love, marriage, and the passage and management of time. In and among the cities of Roman, Iasi, and Bucharest, Console chronicles his loving but comically awkward interactions with friends and family, taking place as they do in a language and culture unfamiliar to him. The resulting travel diary moves beyond daily life to delve into the enigmas of art, suffering, creativity, and family. Mixing memory with acute observations on everything from chess and stray dogs to heartbreak and dreamscape, Romanian Notebook turns the anxiety and rumination of the expectant parent into a deeper way of thinking about the human condition.

Synopsis The Censor's Notebook by : Liliana Corobca
A fascinating narrative of life in communist Romania, and a thought-provoking meditation on the nature of literature and censorship. Winner of the 2023 Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize A Censor’s Notebook is a window into the intimate workings of censorship under communism, steeped in mystery and secrets and lies, confirming the power of literature to capture personal and political truths. The novel begins with a seemingly non-fiction frame story—an exchange of letters between the author and Emilia Codrescu, the female chief of the Secret Documents Office in Romania’s feared State Directorate of Media and Printing, the government branch responsible for censorship. Codrescu had been responsible for the burning and shredding of the censors’ notebooks and the state secrets in them, but prior to fleeing the country in 1974 she had stolen one of these notebooks. Now, forty years later, she makes the notebook available to Liliana, the character of the author, for the newly instituted Museum of Communism. The work of a censor—a job about which it is forbidden to talk—is revealed in this notebook, which discloses the structures of this mysterious institution and describes how these professional readers and ideological error hunters are burdened with hundreds of manuscripts, strict deadlines, and threatening penalties. The censors lose their identity, and are often frazzled by neuroses and other illnesses.

Synopsis Made in Romania by : Ava Escu
Eva, a young native of Romania, comes to Canada in hopes to find a better job and future. When she realizes that her dream was just a fraud, with no desire and no money to return back home, she gets a job as a bar straddling, cocktails slinging, body thrusting waitress at a local Gentlemen Lounge. Eva owns nothing but a working brain and she is not afraid to display it along with her beauty to make ends meet and help the family she left behind in Eastern Europe. Her diary reveals shattered dreams, lives and love stories, humiliating moments and empowering life lessons. This is not a "sexy "confession, it is the raw reality of most Romanian girls who were brought to Canada by delusional "exotic" visas to work for "Sapphire Lounge", the Gentlemen's Lounge where life is no shiny jewel..."Made in Romania " is a book which shouldn't be judged by the cover.Ava Escu,2008.All rights reserved.([email protected])

Synopsis Mircea Eliade’s Journalistic Writings by : Mihaela-Diana Lupșan
This book presents an original way of articulating a discussion of Mircea Eliade’s journalism, a lesser-known chapter in the literary biography of the celebrated philosopher of religion. As it shows, Eliade’s articles serve as the starting point of interesting comments regarding the movement of ideas in the interwar era, historical and cultural contexts, Romania’s cultural life and its relation to European modernism, the dramatic destiny of Mircea Eliade and his generational colleagues under the pressure of a succession of totalitarian regimes, the post-war Romanian diaspora, and the reception of Eliade in Romania and abroad. It shows how Eliade’s approach to culture is subject to a phenomenological variation, examining it from a range of perspectives.
