Synopsis Rising Phoenix and Storming Heaven by : Kyle Mills

Here, in one volume, are the two extraordinary novels that first introduced maverick FBI Special Agent Mark Beamon to readers coast-to-coast, and rocketed Kyle Mills into the upper echelon of thriller writers. Ingenious page-turning tales of conspiracy and terror, they remain as spellbinding, blood-chilling, timely, and relentlessly exciting as when they first appeared in print -- fulfilling Frederick Forsyth's prophecy that "Kyle Mills will soon be a very big player." Rising Phoenix: A shadowy right-wing organization is flooding America's emergency rooms with the dead and dying, and FBI Agent Mark Beamon must stop the slaughter and its mastermind . . . who may be a former law enforcement colleague. Storming Heaven: The brutal murder of a local millionaire and his wife sends agent Mark Beamon into the dark world of a powerful cult . . . and into the heart of a terrifying conspiracy that could bring America to her knees.

Synopsis The Risen Phoenix by : Luis-Alejandro Dinnella-Borrego

The Risen Phoenix charts the changing landscape of black politics and political culture in the postwar South by focusing on the careers of six black congressmen who served between the Civil War and the turn of the nineteenth century: John Mercer Langston of Virginia, James Thomas Rapier of Alabama, Robert Smalls of South Carolina, John Roy Lynch of Mississippi, Josiah Thomas Walls of Florida, and George Henry White of North Carolina. Drawing on a rich combination of traditional political history, gender and black history, and the history of U.S. foreign relations, the book argues that African American congressmen effectively served their constituents’ interests while also navigating their way through a tumultuous post–Civil War Southern political environment. Black congressmen represented their constituents by advancing a policy agenda encompassing strong civil rights protections, economic modernization, and expanded access to education. Local developments such as antiblack aggression and violent electoral contests shaped the policies supported by newly elected black congressmen, including the tactical decision to support amnesty for ex-Confederates. Yet black congressmen ultimately embraced their role as national leaders and as spokesmen not only for their congressional districts and states but for all African Americans throughout the South. As these black leaders searched for effective ways to respond to white supremacy, disenfranchisement, segregation, and lynching, they challenged the barriers of prejudice, paving the way for future black struggles for equality in the twentieth century.

Synopsis The Book of Secrets by : Xinran Xue

The story of a family in modern China with a history of deceit, betrayal and political intrigue, and the communist party's long shadow over them, from the Cultural Revolution to today. Following the lives of military intelligence officer Jie and his wife Moon, The Book of Secrets weaves recently found material into a narrative that not only illuminates the shadowy world of intelligence in China, but also the emotional tragedies that political extremism inflicted on those working within. Drawing on Jie's own vivid biography of his youth, Xinran pieces together his trajectory as he joins the great hope of the Chinese young – the Communist Party – and becomes a loyal cadre until the late 1970s when, as a chief in the security forces, he makes a decision that will poison his family against him. This is a totally unique behind-the-scenes account of a family torn apart by the Tiananmen Square massacre and the attempts of Jie to finally open up the Chinese system to the people, pieced together from an extraordinary archive of personal diaries and letters.
