Synopsis Ring Theory and Its Applications by : Dinh Van Huynh

This volume contains the proceedings of the Ring Theory Session in honor of T. Y. Lam's 70th birthday, at the 31st Ohio State-Denison Mathematics Conference, held from May 25-27, 2012, at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Included are expository articles and research papers covering topics such as cyclically presented modules, Eggert's conjecture, the Mittag-Leffler conditions, clean rings, McCoy rings, QF rings, projective and injective modules, Baer modules, and Leavitt path algebras. Graduate students and researchers in many areas of algebra will find this volume valuable as the papers point out many directions for future work; in particular, several articles contain explicit lists of open questions.

Synopsis Dimensions of Ring Theory by : C. Nastasescu

Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Gad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of s9phistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.

Synopsis Exercises in Classical Ring Theory by : T.Y. Lam

Based in large part on the comprehensive "First Course in Ring Theory" by the same author, this book provides a comprehensive set of problems and solutions in ring theory that will serve not only as a teaching aid to instructors using that book, but also for students, who will see how ring theory theorems are applied to solving ring-theoretic problems and how good proofs are written. The author demonstrates that problem-solving is a lively process: in "Comments" following many solutions he discusses what happens if a hypothesis is removed, whether the exercise can be further generalized, what would be a concrete example for the exercise, and so forth. The book is thus much more than a solution manual.

Synopsis Advances in Ring Theory by : Sergio R. López-Permouth

This volume consists of refereed research and expository articles by both plenary and other speakers at the International Conference on Algebra and Applications held at Ohio University in June 2008, to honor S.K. Jain on his 70th birthday. The articles are on a wide variety of areas in classical ring theory and module theory, such as rings satisfying polynomial identities, rings of quotients, group rings, homological algebra, injectivity and its generalizations, etc. Included are also applications of ring theory to problems in coding theory and in linear algebra.

Synopsis Abstract Algebra by : Thomas Judson

Abstract Algebra: Theory and Applications is an open-source textbook that is designed to teach the principles and theory of abstract algebra to college juniors and seniors in a rigorous manner. Its strengths include a wide range of exercises, both computational and theoretical, plus many non-trivial applications. The first half of the book presents group theory, through the Sylow theorems, with enough material for a semester-long course. The second half is suitable for a second semester and presents rings, integral domains, Boolean algebras, vector spaces, and fields, concluding with Galois Theory.

Synopsis Non-Noetherian Commutative Ring Theory by : S.T. Chapman

This volume consists of twenty-one articles by many of the most prominent researchers in non-Noetherian commutative ring theory. The articles combine in various degrees surveys of past results, recent results that have never before seen print, open problems, and an extensive bibliography. One hundred open problems supplied by the authors have been collected in the volume's concluding chapter. The entire collection provides a comprehensive survey of the development of the field over the last ten years and points to future directions of research in the area. Audience: Researchers and graduate students; the volume is an appropriate source of material for several semester-long graduate-level seminars and courses.

Synopsis Exercises in Classical Ring Theory by : T.Y. Lam

" This useful book, which grew out of the author's lectures at Berkeley, presents some 400 exercises of varying degrees of difficulty in classical ring theory, together with complete solutions, background information, historical commentary, bibliographic details, and indications of possible improvements or generalizations. The book should be especially helpful to graduate students as a model of the problem-solving process and an illustration of the applications of different theorems in ring theory. The author also discusses "the folklore of the subject: the 'tricks of the trade' in ring theory, which are well known to the experts in the field but may not be familiar to others, and for which there is usually no good reference". The problems are from the following areas: the Wedderburn-Artin theory of semisimple rings, the Jacobson radical, representation theory of groups and algebras, (semi)prime rings, (semi)primitive rings, division rings, ordered rings, (semi)local rings, the theory of idempotents, and (semi)perfect rings. Problems in the areas of module theory, category theory, and rings of quotients are not included, since they will appear in a later book. " (T. W. Hungerford, Mathematical Reviews)
