Tush, my good lord, this superficial tale Is but a preface of her worthy praise; King Henry the Sixth: Part I, Act V, Sc. 5 This volume is the direct result of a NATO. Advanced Study Institute (ASI) of the same title, held at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada in August 1991. All the major presentations had been commissioned, so to speak, during the organisational phase. This was done with the view of not only having a structured ASI, whIch is expected to be a high-level tutorial activity, but also the ensuing volume. As will be indicated in the general introduction, there have been a couple of meetings and publications dealing with rhythms in fishes in the past twenty years. However, as in other disciplines, there has been substantial progress in this field also. Further, I wished to cover almost all aspects and come out with a volme which will be as complete as possible. Of course, this failed to materialise. In spite of starting the arrangements two years before the event, several lecturers were not able to attend due to a number of reasons. Some could be replaced while others could not Taking into account their individual specialties, I asked about twenty active workers in the field to provide provoking overviews, not simply reviews of their own work. This book highlights the fundamental association between aquaculture and engineering in classifying fish hunger behaviour by means of machine learning techniques. Understanding the underlying factors that affect fish growth is essential, since they have implications for higher productivity in fish farms. Computer vision and machine learning techniques make it possible to quantify the subjective perception of hunger behaviour and so allow food to be provided as necessary. The book analyses the conceptual framework of motion tracking, feeding schedule and prediction classifiers in order to classify the hunger state, and proposes a system comprising an automated feeder system, image-processing module, as well as machine learning classifiers. Furthermore, the system substitutes conventional, complex modelling techniques with a robust, artificial intelligence approach. The findings presented are of interest to researchers, fish farmers, and aquaculture technologist wanting to gain insights into the productivity of fish and fish behaviour.

Act 1, Sc. 2 This volume is the outcome of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in August 1979 at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada. About 130 participants from all the countries of the aJiiance as well as India and Japan attended this event which lasted two weeks. Seventeen of these participants had been invited to present reviews of chosen topics, usually in their specialty. This book is constituted mainly of these presentations, which were prepared as chapters. In addition, six of the participants, whose seminars were found to complement the main chapters, were coopted by the invited lectures/authors to provide additional chapters. Although a lecture was given on electric fields, a chapter on this matter is unfortunately absent due to the lack of preparation time. One may say that Environmental Physiology of Fishes as a discipline originated in Canada. Having been involved as a teacher and worker in this field since 19 54, it was but natural that I was tempted to organise an ASI and get a volume out on the matter. I was encouraged by discussions with colleagues and the acceptance on the part of a large number of eminent colleagues to attend the ASI, deliver lectures and write chapters.

The book also focuses on biological clock applications in a 24x7 human society, particularly in connection with life-style associated disorders like obesity and diabetes. It is a valuable resource for advanced undergraduates, researchers and professionals engaged in the study of the science of biological timekeeping.

This book is about the behaviour of teleosts, a well-defined, highly successful, taxonomic group of vertebrate animals sharing a common body plan and forming the vast majority of living bony fishes. There are weH over 22000 living species of teleosts, including nearly all those of importance in com mercial fisheries and aquaculture. Teleosts are represented injust about every conceivable aquatic environment from temporary desert pools to the deep ocean, from soda lakes to sub-zero Antarctic waters. Behaviour is the primary interface between these effective survival machines and their environment: behavioural plasticity is one of the keys to their success. The study of animal behaviour has undergone revolutionary changes in the past decade under the dual impact of behavioural ecology and sociobiology. The modern body of theory provides quantitatively testable and experi mentaHy accessible hypotheses. Much current work in animal behaviour has concentrated on birds and mammals, animals with ostensibly more complex structure, physiology and behavioural capacity, but there is a growing body of information about the behaviour of fishes. There is now increasing awareness that the same ecological and evolutionary rules govern teleost fish, and that their behaviour is not just a simplified version of that seen in birds and mammals. The details of fish behaviour intimately reflect unique and efficient adaptations to their three-dimensional aquatic environment.

GUTSHOP '84 was the fourth in a series of workshops on various aspects of fish feeding (Table 1). Initially, the organizers merely invited regional (Pacific Northwest) fisheries scientists to share, and possibly develop mutual solutions to, the many technical problems associated with trying to obtain meaningful, quantitative information from fish stomach contents, and the subsequent statistical treatment and interpretation of the multivariate data. Since then, although not explicitly based upon any internal cycle, these scientists and increasingly more and more dispersed colleagues continued to congregate for workshop deliberations every two or three years. From the 49 attendees at the first workshop, the number of participants had grown to 65 at GUTSHOP '78, and 107 at GUTSHOP '81. By the third workshop, we were drawing scientists from across the U. S. and Canada, and from as far away as Norway. The topical content of the workshops has also evolved from the predominantly technical aspects of fish collection and stomach contents processing techniques, statistical analysis, and data manipulation and presentation to considerations of theoretical ecology, bioenergetics, and behavior.

It is almost thirty years since Professor G. G. Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives.
