Young Kyle lives on the edge of the Everglades and explores trails in the park. He stumbles on a town lost in time where everyone talks in rhyme. He first thinks they are poachers but finds out they are the lost generation of beatniks who came to Florida in the 1950's. The establisment banished them out into the boonies, where they got cut off from society for 45 years and started talking in rhyme.

A collection of African American songs and rhymes, some of which in their original African language followed by translations, all of which concluded with an essay not only describing the content and the manner in which the songs and rhymes were told, sung and danced to, but also the effect they had on the minds of African Americans living through the days of slavery and following until 1922.

Of Life and Times That Now And Then Rhyme includes stories from short to long that span Mark Raney's fiction writing career.
