Roberts, Director of Publications at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, gives a picture of the current state of Rhode Island genealogy and has an updating of his Bibliography of 100 Colonial Rhode Island Families.

Pardon Tillinghast, son of Pardon Tillinghast and Sarah Browne, was born in about 1622 in Severn Cliffs, Sussex, England. He married (Sarah?) Butterworth and they had three children. He married Lydia Taber and they had nine children. He died 29 January 1717/18 in Providence, Rhode Island. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Rhode Island and New York.

This work is an exhaustive study of 160 families. For each family covered, a skeletal genealogy is given, showing births, marriages, and deaths in successive generations of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. This is then followed by a narrative detailing the known facts about each person and family according to existing records. The narratives commence with the first member of the family to come to New England, identifying his place of origin and occupation, the date and place of his arrival in New England, and his residence--all information that was accumulated from the author's extensive research in wills, inventories, deeds, land records, and church records. The narratives then turn to the children of the original settler, treating them in like manner, and to their children, and so on until the genealogy is fully developed.

The articles in this unique collection devoted exclusively to Rhode Island genealogy were taken from a total of six Rhode Island periodicals: Rhode Island Historical Society Collections, Rhode Island History, Publications of the Rhode Island Historical Society, Newport Historical Magazine, Narragansett Historical Register, and Rhode Island Historical Tracts. Includes the most complete register of arms of Rhode Island families ever published. Originally published in 1983.
