Synopsis Restarting Delayed Nuclear Power Plant Projects. IAEA Nuclear Energy Series, No. NP-T-3.4 by : IAEA.

The restarting of nuclear power plant projects with delays of several years in respect of the original scheduled commercial operation date presents particular management issues. These are beyond the normal management tasks for projects implemented within original planned schedules. Some practical experience from restarted delayed projects were reviewed and included in the present publication, which addresses specific management issues to be considered for a delayed project in the period after the decision for restarting is adopted. The publication covers those management issues not considered.

Synopsis Integrated Life Cycle Risk Management for New Nuclear Power Plants by : IAEA

Integrated risk management (IRM) is particularly important during the preparation and construction phases of a nuclear power plant (NPP) and anticipates the risks that could arise during the operation and decommissioning phases. This publication is designed to enhance stakeholders' understanding of the fundamental processes, procedures, and methods for IRM. Practical guidelines are provided and best practices shared. The importance of having appropriate risk management policies, especially when considering the various contractual and organizational arrangements in different construction entities, operating organizations and Member States is emphasized. Tables are provided throughout the publication to indicate the causes of risks and their impacts on the applicable NPP or project. Economic evaluation techniques are also introduced. Member States contemplating expanding their existing nuclear power plant fleets can be expected to benefit from this publication, but it will likely be most valuable for Member States newly embarking upon a nuclear power programme.

Synopsis The Next Atomic Age by : Matt Alderton

It's been five years since tsunami waves triggered a meltdown at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant. After radiation leaks forced 300,000 residents to evacuate their homes, the country chose to shutter all 43 of its nuclear reactors indefinitely -- sparking a global debate over the future of nuclear power. When the government began restarting reactors in August, it became clear the debate was far from over. Demonstrators were quick to swarm each site, protesting the reactors' perceived health and safety risks. Yet despite its tepid public reception, many governments see nuclear energy as an important source of emission-free power. From China and India to France and the U.K., countries are investing in new nuclear construction to help reduce their reliance on carbon-based fuels. With 67 new nuclear reactors under construction in 15 countries, global nuclear capacity is expected to more than double by 2030, according to the International Atomic Energy Association. And by 2040, the number of countries that have at least one nuclear plant is predicted to increase from 30 to 36, according to the 2015 World Nuclear Industry Status Report.

Synopsis The Technological and Economic Future of Nuclear Power by : Reinhard Haas

This open access book discusses the eroding economics of nuclear power for electricity generation as well as technical, legal, and political acceptance issues. The use of nuclear power for electricity generation is still a heavily disputed issue. Aside from technical risks, safety issues, and the unsolved problem of nuclear waste disposal, the economic performance is currently a major barrier. In recent years, the costs have skyrocketed especially in the European countries and North America. At the same time, the costs of alternatives such as photovoltaics and wind power have significantly decreased.

Synopsis Ageing Management of Nuclear Power Plants During Delayed Construction Periods, Extended Shutdown and Permanent Shutdown Prior to Decommissioning by : International Atomic Energy Agency

As part of the IAEA programme on International Generic Ageing Lessons Learned (IGALL), this publication provides a summarized description of internationally accepted practices. Examples of the national approaches to ageing management for the specific periods of extended shutdown, delayed construction and post final shutdown as applied in the nuclear power plants of participating IGALL Member States are presented. In addition, some of the information is also applicable for the evaluation of ageing effects prior to and after restarting operation. The publication complements existing IAEA publications on ageing management approaches of Member States during normal operation and is intended for use by regulatory bodies, operating organizations, manufacturers, designers and technical support organizations.
