Synopsis Varieties of Representations of Finitely Generated Groups by : Alexander Lubotzky

The n-dimensional representations, over an algebraically closed characteristic zero field k, of a finitely generated group are parameterized by an affine algebraic variety over k. The tangent spaces of this variety are subspaces of spaces of one-cocycles and thus the geometry of the variety is locally related to the cohomology of the group. The cohomology is also related to the prounipotent radical of the proalgebraic hull of the group. This paper exploits these two relations to compute dimensions of representation varieties, especially for nilpotent groups and their generalizations. It also presents the foundations of the theory of representation varieties in an expository, self-contained manner.

Synopsis $SL(2)$ Representations of Finitely Presented Groups by : Gregory W. Brumfiel

This book is essentially self-contained and requires only a basic abstract algebra course as background. The book includes and extends much of the classical theory of SL(2) representations of groups. Readers will find SL(2) Representations of Finitely Presented Groups relevant to geometric theory of three dimensional manifolds, representations of infinite groups, and invariant theory. Features...... * A new finitely computable invariant H[*p] associated to groups and used to study the SL(2) representations of *p * Invariant theory and knot theory related through SL(2) representations of knot groups.

Synopsis Topology And Teichmuller Spaces - Proceedings Of The 37th Taniguchi Symposium by : Sadayoshi Kojima

This proceedings is a collection of articles on Topology and Teichmüller Spaces. Special emphasis is being put on the universal Teichmüller space, the topology of moduli of algebraic curves, the space of representations of discrete groups, Kleinian groups and Dehn filling deformations, the geometry of Riemann surfaces, and some related topics.

Synopsis The Grothendieck Theory of Dessins D'Enfants by : Leila Schneps

Dessins d'Enfants are combinatorial objects, namely drawings with vertices and edges on topological surfaces. Their interest lies in their relation with the set of algebraic curves defined over the closure of the rationals, and the corresponding action of the absolute Galois group on them. The study of this group via such realted combinatorial methods as its action on the Dessins and on certain fundamental groups of moduli spaces was initiated by Alexander Grothendieck in his unpublished Esquisse d'un Programme, and developed by many of the mathematicians who have contributed to this volume. The various articles here unite all of the basics of the subject as well as the most recent advances. Researchers in number theory, algebraic geometry or related areas of group theory will find much of interest in this book.

Synopsis Algebraic Generalizations of Discrete Groups by : Benjamin Fine

A survey of one-relator products of cyclics or groups with a single defining relation, extending the algebraic study of Fuchsian groups to the more general context of one-relator products and related group theoretical considerations. It provides a self-contained account of certain natural generalizations of discrete groups.

Synopsis Galois Groups over ? by : Y. Ihara

This volume is the offspring of a week-long workshop on "Galois groups over Q and related topics," which was held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute during the week March 23-27, 1987. The organizing committee consisted of Kenneth Ribet (chairman), Yasutaka Ihara, and Jean-Pierre Serre. The conference focused on three principal themes: 1. Extensions of Q with finite simple Galois groups. 2. Galois actions on fundamental groups, nilpotent extensions of Q arising from Fermat curves, and the interplay between Gauss sums and cyclotomic units. 3. Representations of Gal(Q/Q) with values in GL(2)j deformations and connections with modular forms. Here is a summary of the conference program: • G. Anderson: "Gauss sums, circular units and the simplex" • G. Anderson and Y. Ihara: "Galois actions on 11"1 ( ••• ) and higher circular units" • D. Blasius: "Maass forms and Galois representations" • P. Deligne: "Galois action on 1I"1(P-{0, 1, oo}) and Hodge analogue" • W. Feit: "Some Galois groups over number fields" • Y. Ihara: "Arithmetic aspect of Galois actions on 1I"1(P - {O, 1, oo})" - survey talk • U. Jannsen: "Galois cohomology of i-adic representations" • B. Matzat: - "Rationality criteria for Galois extensions" - "How to construct polynomials with Galois group Mll over Q" • B. Mazur: "Deforming GL(2) Galois representations" • K. Ribet: "Lowering the level of modular representations of Gal( Q/ Q)" • J-P. Serre: - Introductory Lecture - "Degree 2 modular representations of Gal(Q/Q)" • J.

Synopsis The Arcata Conference on Representations of Finite Groups, Part 1 by : Paul Fong

The papers in these proceedings of the 1986 Arcata Summer Institute bear witness to the extraordinarily vital and intense research in the representation theory of finite groups. The confluence of diverse mathematical disciplines has brought forth work of great scope and depth. Particularly striking is the influence of algebraic geometry and cohomology theory in the modular representation theory and the character theory of reductive groups over finite fields, and in the general modular representation theory of finite groups. The continuing developments in block theory and the general character theory of finite groups is noteworthy. The expository and research aspects of the Summer Institute are well represented by these papers.
