Excerpt from Report on Condition of Woman and Child Wage-Earners in the United States, Vol. 5 of 19: Wage-Earning Women in Stories and Factories Sir: In partial compliance with the Senate resolution of May 25, 1910, I beg to transmit herewith the report showing the results of an investigation into the living conditions of wage-earning women in department and other retail stores and in factories in certain cities. This report has just been completed, and is the fifth section available for transmission of the larger report on the investigation carried on in accordance with the act of Congress approved January 29, 1907, which provided "That the Secretary of Commerce and Labor be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to investigate and report on the industrial, social, moral, educational, and physical condition of woman and child workers in the United States wherever employed, with special reference to their age, hours of labor, term of employment, health, illiteracy, sanitary and other conditions surrounding their occupation, and the means employed for the protection of their health, person, and morals." The remaining sections of the general report are being completed as rapidly as possible and will each be transmitted at the earliest practicable moment. Sir: I beg to transmit herewith Volume V of the report on woman and child wage-earners in the United States which relates to the wage-earning women employed in department and other retail stores and in factories.
