Synopsis Reflections on Irish Criminology by : Orla Lynch
This book explores the development of the discipline of Criminology on the island of Ireland, through conversations with leading criminologists. Adding depth and breadth to the understandings of this growing discipline, leading scholars discuss their personal journey to Criminology, their research areas, their theoretical influences and the impact of the discipline of Criminology on how we think about criminal justice in Ireland and beyond. Research topics include desistence, victims’ rights, parole, policing and research methods. The book explores what influences framed the work of key thinkers in the area and how Criminology intersects with policy and practice within and beyond the criminological and criminal justice fields. It provides an insight into how the discipline has emerged as a discrete subject through a discussion of Ireland's key historical moments. It argues that Ireland's unique historical, cultural, political, social and economic arrangements and research about Ireland have much to offer the international field of Criminology. This volume also reflects on future directions for Irish Criminology, as well as sounding warnings to ensure the healthy development of the field as a discipline in its own right and as an interdisciplinary undertaking.

Synopsis Giving Voice to Diversity in Criminological Research by : Lynch, Orla
The people most impacted by criminal justice policies and practices are seldom included in the decision-making processes that affect their lives. Building on the ‘nothing about us without us’ social movement, this edited volume advocates an inclusive approach to criminology that gives voice to historically marginalized, silenced, and ignored groups. Incorporating the experiences of service users, academics, and state and grassroots practitioners, this volume considers how researchers might bridge the gap between theory and lived experience. It furthers criminological scholarship by capturing the voices of marginalized groups and exploring how criminology can authentically incorporate these voices.

Synopsis The Militarisation of Behaviours by : Błażej Kaucz
This book examines how historical military influences can become embedded and used by the state to control citizens' behaviour, termed the militarisation of behaviours. It refers to the treatment of citizens by their state in a manner resembling the treatment of soldiers by the army. The militarisation of behaviours is a process of mass social control where the state exercises its powers over the population, blurring the boundaries between a dichotomous divide of civilian and military life. This book focuses on the social process of how Polish post-WWII emergency legislation was normalised and how through it the Polish communist state (from 1943/4 until 1989) introduced and enforced the process of militarisation of behaviours. It discusses the impact of the emergency legislation on the Republic of Ireland as a comparison. It offers a useful lens to understand the social and political processes happening currently in Poland, Ireland, and elsewhere, with the increasing influence of the (far) right. This book is situated in the framework of criminology and socio-legal studies.

Synopsis Post-Fandom and the Millennial Blues by : Steve Redhead
Soccer fandom has traditionally been seen as an important part of adolescent, generally male, identity making. In Post-Fandom and the Millennial Blues , Steve Redhead shows how this tradition of youth culture of fandom has been eroded in the last years of the twentieth century by the more fleeting, style conscious allegiances inspired by television, films and music. The clubs that young people follow are determined by advertising and popular music; the games that they watch are brought to them by the globalized culture of television, as in the world cup staged in America; even their fears of so-called soccer hooliganism are determined by media-engendered moral panics at a time when the phenomenon itself seems to be dying away.

Synopsis Sensory Penalities by : Kate Herrity
Sensory Penalties aims to reinvigorate a conversation about the role of sensory experience in empirical investigation. It explores the visceral, personal reflections buried within forgotten criminological field notes, to ask what privileging these sensorial experiences does for how we understand and research spaces of punishment and social control.
