Synopsis Reflections from Canoe Country by : Christopher Angus

When Christopher Angus and two friends were canoeing a stretch of the Grass River in the Adirondacks in 1986, they were cited by the Department of Environmental Conservation for trespassing on the timberlands of the Champion Paper Company. Amazed to find that the law protects corporate rather than environmental interests in a publicly owned state park, Angus joined the decades-long battle to reopen Adirondack waterways. In this collection, Angus, a columnist and lifelong resident of the Adirondack region, writes with the discerning eye of a poet and the ear of a political commentator. He treats the reader to descriptions of his many canoeing experiences and to his thoughts on environmental protection. As Paul Jamieson writes in the Foreword, "Reading these short pieces in rhythmic sequence is like riding the waves in a kayak off the Nova Scotia coast." Angus's strong ties to Canada's maritime provinces and to the St. Lawrence River expand the focus of the book to include the larger Northeastern wilderness. It is here, he maintains, in the most densely populated region of North America, that we will finally learn whether man can coexist with the natural world.

Synopsis From a Wooden Canoe by : Jerry Dennis

In these acclaimed essays, Jerry Dennis, widely recognized as one of our finest writers on nature and the outdoors, turns his attention to old passions and finds new reasons to appreciate them. This engaging collection explores the quintessential American sports of canoeing and camping and pays tribute to the things worth keeping, from wooden canoes and pocket knives to cast-iron skillets, long-johns, canvas tents, and fine moments on the water. At a deeper level, it is about respect—for our possessions, for the natural world, for one another—and about the pleasures of a life well spent. From a Wooden Canoe is a celebration of the good things and the simple pleasures of life outdoors. It is a book to be treasured, to be read on winter evenings and rainy afternoons, and to be kept handy on a cabin shelf. PRAISE: “Jerry Dennis knows the good stuff: How to make your matches waterproof; why it’s good to have a Thermos handy; and how long johns got their name. Mr. Dennis also knows how to write amusing, informative essays about the gear we use outdoors. From a Wooden Canoe is the most satisfying kind of nature writing because it makes you want to get up and get out. Give these essays a good read, and then find your own canoe.” —Wall Street Journal “As Jerry Dennis’s recent book, From a Wooden Canoe, attests, canoes do inspire passion and fidelity. The thirty-one pieces here—most of them from the pages of Canoe and Kayak magazine—include tender odes to hand-hewn wooden paddlers and the rough work of portaging, as well as reflections on other old-school outdoor stuff: homemade waterproof matches, the smell of canvas, and the mysterious, indestructible thermos.” —The New Yorker “Dennis writes concise, well-informed, witty prose; his tone is friendly and appreciative of tradition without being maudlin. The celebratory tone of most of the essays is nicely tempered by a send-up of curmudgeons and a concluding essay that might have come from O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night. Recommend this fine example of literary outdoors writing to fans of Bill Barich and W.D. Wetherell.” —Booklist

Synopsis Canoe Country by : Roy MacGregor

One of our favourite chroniclers of all things Canadian presents a rollicking, personal, photo-filled history of the relationship between a country and its canoes. From the earliest explorers on the Columbia River in BC or the Mattawa in Ontario to a doomed expedition of voyageurs up the Nile to rescue Khartoum; from the author's family roots deep in the Algonquin wilderness to modern families who have canoed across the country (kids and dogs included): Canoe Country is Roy MacGregor's celebration of the essential and enduring love affair Canadians have with our first and still favourite means of getting around. Famous paddlers have been so enchanted with the canoe that one swore God made Canada as the perfect country in which to paddle it. Drawing on MacGregor's own decades spent whenever possible with a paddle in his hand, this is a story of high adventure on white water and the sweetest peace in nature's quietest corners, from the author best able (and most eager) to tell it.

Synopsis Rooted in Rock by : Jim Gould

In the past twenty years the Adirondacks have inspired a resident population of writers who have gained regional and national prominence using the Adirondack region as their primary setting and subject matter—or at least as a significant point of departure. Rooted in Rock is the first collection of its kind in more than twenty years, since Paul Jamieson's Adirondack Reader. What makes the volume unique, though, is the number of contributors who not only make the Adirondacks their subject, but who make their homes in these mountains. The works in this volume include contemporary essays, literary nonfiction, poetry, short fiction, and excerpted fiction and are a mix of new and previously published writings by forty-three authors, established as well as emerging, including Bill McKibben, Sue Halpern, Russell Banks, Alex Schoumatoff, Chase Twichell, Curt Stager, Amy Godine, and Jim Gould, to name a few.

Synopsis Up North by : Sam Cook

Up North is a certain way the wind feels on your face and the way an old wool shirt feels on your back. It's the peace that comes over you when you sit down to read one of your old trip journals, or the anticipation that bubbles inside when you start sorting through your tackle box early in the spring. In this unforgettable collection of essays, Sam Cook portrays the enchanting North Country as a state of mind as much as a geographical area. Up North captures the mystic moods, seasonal subtleties, and colorful characters that fill the region from the Minnesota canoe country to the vast expanse of the Northwest Territories. Organized by time of year, Up North describes every season's pleasures--sled dog racing in winter, hooking a northern pike on the first spring fishing trip, building a summer campfire, watching the aurora borealis in fall. Up North is an invitation to explore canoe country through Sam Cook's eyes and your own. "My favorite book for thedreamers or for any outdoor person who enjoys a good story... Sam Cook is a master at weaving a tale."
