Synopsis Irish Voters Decide by : Richard Sinnott
This textbook explores voting behaviour in Irish general elections and referendums since independence in 1922. By interpreting the latest survey, opinion poll and statistical data for the non-psephologist, Richard Sinnott explores how and why Irish voters' preferences have changed, and asks whether the 1922 general election has heralded a fundamental realignment in the Irish political system.

Synopsis The Referendum and Other Essays on Constitutional Politics by : Matt Qvortrup
Until recently, referendums were little used. After the Scottish independence and Brexit referendums, they have come to the fore as a mechanism with the potential to disrupt the status quo and radically change political direction. This book looks at the historical development of the referendum, its use in different jurisdictions, and the types of constitutional questions it seeks to address. Written in an engaging style, the book offers a clear, objective overview of this important political and constitutional tool.

Synopsis Leadership in Disguise by : Remco Vahl
First published in 1997, this volume is situated within a general discussion in which the European Commission is the subject of much myth and speculation. While the political debate on its role in EC decision-making continues, there is still little consensus among academics on the basic nature of the institution – is the Commission an independent, supranational body, or is it dominated by intergovernmental influences? Leadership in Disguise enters this general discussion by providing an original empirical analysis of the Commission’s role during the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations (1986-93). Focusing on the controversial agricultural issue, the book sets out to discover how decisions were made within the European Community. This is a systematic and thorough study of how the Commission can play a leading role in Community decision-making, and will appeal to policy-makers, students and all those seeking an insight into the Commission’s role and EC decision-making.

Synopsis Referendums Around the World by : Matt Qvortrup
This book provides a comprehensive summary and analysis of all the nationwide referendums since 1793. Referendums are ubiquitous and they are increasingly becoming vehicles for political change – or sometimes vehicles of conservatism. In 2016, for example, the voters in the United Kingdom caused a major upheaval when they voted for leaving the European Union. Later in the same year, a majority of the voters in Colombia rejected a peace plan carefully negotiated by the political elites to end decades of civil war. Were these decisions prudent? Why were these issues submitted to referendums? Why did the majority of voters vote against the governments’ recommendations? Have ‘the people’ had grown tired of the old political class? Was this a new tendency? These are some of the questions addressed in this new edition, which will be compulsory reading for anyone interested in or concerned about populism and democracy.

Synopsis Financing the 1992 Election by : Herbert E. Alexander
"The Financing series constitutes a unique resource. ... The volume on the 1992 campaigns is an example of the series at its best. ... There is not much in the study of American politics that merits the word 'indispensable, ' but these nine volumes do". -- American Political Science Review

Synopsis Constitutional Policy in Multilevel Government by : Arthur Benz
The search for a robust balance of power is a continuous challenge for multilevel political system. Institutions like parliaments or courts can protect the existing order. However, necessary adjustments to economic, social, or international challenges or policies determined to improve ineffective structures or to prevent disintegration require constitutional amendments. Whereas constitutional policy appears as essential to maintain balance, changing a constitution is rather difficult in multilevel governments. Due to the veto power of many actors pursuing divergent interests, policies aiming to redistribute power or fiscal resources risk to end in the joint decision trap. Hence, multilevel government is confronted by a fundamental dilemma. Constitutional Policy in Multilevel Government compares processes of constitutional reform in federal and regionalized states. Based on a theoretical framework emphasizing the relevance of negotiations in parliamentary, intergovernmental, and societal arenas, it identifies conditions for successful reforms and explains the consequences of failed reforms. Moreover, it highlights the interplay of reform processes and constitutional evolution as essential to maintaining a robust balance of power. The book demonstrates that an appropriate arrangement of multiple arenas of negotiation including executives, members of parliament and civil society organizations, and sequential order of reform processes proves fundamental to prevent federal or regionalized governments from becoming either instable or ending with rigid constitutions. Transformations in Governance is a major new academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states up to supranational institutions, down to subnational governments, and side-ways to public-private networks. It brings together work that significantly advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series targets mainly single-authored or co-authored work, but it is pluralistic in terms of disciplinary specialization, research design, method, and geographical scope. Case studies as well as comparative studies, historical as well as contemporary studies, and studies with a national, regional, or international focus are all central to its aims. Authors use qualitative, quantitative, formal modeling, or mixed methods. A trade mark of the books is that they combine scholarly rigour with readable prose and an attractive production style. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the VU Amsterdam, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.
