Synopsis Differential Undercounts in the U.S. Census by : William P. O’Hare
This open access book describes the differences in US census coverage, also referred to as “differential undercount”, by showing which groups have the highest net undercounts and which groups have the greatest undercount differentials, and discusses why such undercounts occur. In addition to focusing on measuring census coverage for several demographic characteristics, including age, gender, race, Hispanic origin status, and tenure, it also considers several of the main hard-to-count populations, such as immigrants, the homeless, the LBGT community, children in foster care, and the disabled. However, given the dearth of accurate undercount data for these groups, they are covered less comprehensively than those demographic groups for which there is reliable undercount data from the Census Bureau. This book is of interest to demographers, statisticians, survey methodologists, and all those interested in census coverage.

Synopsis 2010 Census: the Bureau¿s Plans for Reducing the Undercount Show Promise, But Key Uncertainties Remain by : Robert Goldenkoff
An accurate decennial census relies on finding and counting people in their place of residence, and collecting complete and correct info. on them. This is difficult as the nation¿s population is growing larger, more diverse, and difficult to find and reluctant to participate in the census. Undercounts have plagued the census and the differential impact on various sub-populations such as minorities and children is problematic. This report describes: (1) activities the Bureau plans to use to help reduce the differential undercount and improve participation; (2) the various challenges and opportunities that might affect the Bureau¿s ability to improve coverage in 2010; and (3) how different population estimates can impact the allocation of fed. grant funds. Charts and tables.

Synopsis The Undercount of Young Children in the U.S. Decennial Census by : William P. O'Hare
This book covers several dimensions of the undercount of young children in the U.S. Decennial Census, examines the data from the 2010 U.S. Decennial Census in detail and looks at trends in the undercount of children over time. Other aspects included are the geographic distribution of the net undercount and an exploration for some of the potential explanations for the high net undercount of children. The number of young children in the US is growing, but almost one million young children (under age 5) were missed in the 2010 U.S. Decennial Census. The net undercount of young children has been higher than any other age group for the past several decades and is increasing rapidly, but little attention has been paid to the issue but demographers or the public.

Synopsis Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses by : United Nations. Statistical Division
The population and housing census is part of an integrated national statistical system, which may include other censuses (for example, agriculture), surveys, registers and administrative files. It provides, at regular intervals, the benchmark for population count at national and local levels. For small geographical areas or sub-populations, it may represent the only source of information for certain social, demographic and economic characteristics. For many countries the census also provides a solid framework to develop sampling frames. This publication represents one of the pillars for data collection on the number and characteristics of the population of a country.

Synopsis 2010 Census by : Robert Goldenkoff
The U.S. Census Bureau (Bureau) puts forth tremendous effort to conduct a complete and accurate count of the nation's population and housing; yet some degree of error in the form of persons missed, duplicated, or counted in the wrong place is inevitable due to the complexity in counting a large and diverse population. The Bureau designed two operations, Coverage Follow-up (CFU) and Field Verification (FV), to reduce certain types of counting, or coverage, errors in the 2010 Census. This report assessed: (1) the extent to which the Bureau completed CFU and FV on schedule and within estimated cost; and (2) the implications of their key design elements for improving coverage. Illus. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find publication.
