Synopsis Butterflies of Cyprus by : Eddie John

This book summarises decades of research and collation of distributional data. From the tiny Freyeria trochylus (Grass Jewel), Europe's smallest butterfly, to the magnificent, newly arrived Papilio demoleus (Lime Swallowtail), this comprehensively illustrated reference book and field guide includes all butterfly species known in Cyprus over the past 100 years. Where applicable, reference is made to subspecies of related taxa present in nearby countries of the eastern Mediterranean. The images on the cover represent the island's seven endemics, discussed in depth. Included, too, are detailed distribution maps representing records garnered from almost 300 recorders/sources (particularly members of the Cyprus Butterfly Study Group), over a period of more than 20 years.

Synopsis Key Topics in Conservation Biology 2 by : David W. Macdonald

Following the much acclaimed success of the first volume of Key Topics in Conservation Biology, this entirely new second volume addresses an innovative array of key topics in contemporary conservation biology. Written by an internationally renowned team of authors, Key Topics in Conservation Biology 2 adds to the still topical foundations laid in the first volume (published in 2007) by exploring a further 25 cutting-edge issues in modern biodiversity conservation, including controversial subjects such as setting conservation priorities, balancing the focus on species and ecosystems, and financial mechanisms to value biodiversity and pay for its conservation. Other chapters, setting the framework for conservation, address the sociology and philosophy of peoples’ relation with Nature and its impact on health, and such challenging practical issues as wildlife trade and conflict between people and carnivores. As a new development, this second volume of Key Topics includes chapters on major ecosystems, such as forests, islands and both fresh and marine waters, along with case studies of the conservation of major taxa: plants, butterflies, birds and mammals. A further selection of topics consider how to safeguard the future through monitoring, reserve planning, corridors and connectivity, together with approaches to reintroduction and re-wilding, along with managing wildlife disease. A final chapter, by the editors, synthesises thinking on the relationship between biodiversity conservation and human development. Each topic is explored by a team of top international experts, assembled to bring their own cross-cutting knowledge to a penetrating synthesis of the issues from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The interdisciplinary nature of biodiversity conservation is reflected throughout the book. Each essay examines the fundamental principles of the topic, the methodologies involved and, crucially, the human dimension. In this way, Key Topics in Conservation Biology 2, like its sister volume, Key Topics in Conservation Biology, embraces issues from cutting-edge ecological science to policy, environmental economics, governance, ethics, and the practical issues of implementation. Key Topics in Conservation Biology 2 will, like its sister volume, be a valuable resource in universities and colleges, government departments, and conservation agencies. It is aimed particularly at senior undergraduate and graduate students in conservation biology and wildlife management and wider ecological and environmental subjects, and those taking Masters degrees in any field relevant to conservation and the environment. Conservation practitioners, policy-makers, and the wider general public eager to understand more about important environmental issues will also find this book invaluable.

Synopsis Insect Conservation: Past, Present and Prospects by : Tim R. New

The history of interest and practice in insect conservation is summarised and traced through contributions from many of the leaders in the discipline, to provide the first broad global account of how insects have become incorporated into considerations of conservation. The essays collectively cover the genesis and development of insect conservation, emphasising its strong foundation within the northern temperate regions and the contrasts with much of the rest of the world. Major present-day scenarios are discussed, together with possible developments and priorities in insect conservation for the future.

Synopsis Rhopalocera Europæ Descripta Et Delineata, Vol. 1 by : Henry Charles Lang

Excerpt from Rhopalocera Europ Descripta Et Delineata, Vol. 1: The Butterflies of Europe Described and Figured; d104 II. - Its primary object is to deal with the Rhopalocera of Europe. All descriptions, therefore, of non-european species are to be taken as entirely supplementary, and not as aiming at anything like completeness. These additional notices of non-european palearctic species have not been by any means easy to prepare, on account of the impossibility, in many cases, of examining actual specimens. The original descriptions being scattered through various works in various languages, to collect them has been a matter involving the expenditure of considerable time, and has delayed the completion of the work longer than was at first expected. To prevent further delay I am obliged to omit from the text the description of some species recently discovered in the hitherto unworked regions of Central Asia; but at the end of the book willbe found a list of the Rhopalocera ot the Palaearctic region, including, I believe, all the species known up to the present date, though it must be remembered that new ones are being constantly added. III. - Of a still more supplementary nature must be regarded the very short notices, or even mere mention, of Nearctic species. They are to be taken solely in the light of notes, designed to draw the reader's attention to the great similarity between the butterflies of the northern and temperate regions of the Old and New Worlds, and thus to assist him in widening his field of observation. These additions are not noticed in the index of names, so that their interference with the general plan of the work will be avoided. IV. - Concerning the figures, I can only say that every effort has been made to secure accuracy in representing the various species. The process of chromo-lithography was chosen as being most likely to attain this end and Mr. Knight, the artist, whose name appears on each plate, has drawn the figures under my direction, in most cases from Nature, only two or three having been copied from authentic figures. The majority of the European butterflies have not before been figured in any English work; and one or two are, I believe, represented here altogether for the first time. Only two species - one, Lycaena Panope, a very rare Russian species, and the second a newly-discovered member of the family Hesperides - are unavoidably omitted. Synopsis Case Studies in Ecohealth by : Susan C. Cork

Case Studies in Ecohealth is primarily intended to be a student textbook, using a series of case studies to illustrate key concepts applicable to EcoHealth, with a focus on taking an interdisciplinary approach to solving complex problems at the interface between animals and their environment. Using case studies, the book will illustrate key concepts in ‘EcoHealth’ allowing readers to better understand the strengths and challenges of taking an ‘Eco Health’ approach Within the key themes addressed in the book, the reader will gain insight into how to approach complex problems at the animal-environment interface using a transdisciplinary approach Access to the case studies presented in the book, along with supplementary material on line, will provide the reader with good examples of current and emerging issues for discussion in the class room or for field experience programs 5m Books

Synopsis Changing Diversity in Changing Environment by : Oscar Grillo

As everybody knows, the dynamic interactions between biotic and abiotic factors, as well as the anthropic ones, considerably affect global climate changes and consequently biology, ecology and distribution of life forms of our planet. These important natural events affect all ecosystems, causing important changes on biodiversity. Systematic and phylogenetic studies, biogeographic distribution analysis and evaluations of diversity richness are focal topics of this book written by international experts, some even considering economical effects and future perspectives on the managing and conservation plans.
