When he fled Austria in 1934, Ludwig von Mises left behind a wealth of writings that, he supposed, were lost forever. Seized by the Nazi Gestapo, the papers were subsequently captured by the Soviet KGB and were archived in Moscow. Their discovery in 1996, by Professors Richard and Anna Ebeling of Hillsdale College, received widespread attention. In cooperation with Hillsdale College, Liberty Fund will make available these long-lost writings, many of which have not previously appeared in English, as part of a three-volume edition of selected writings by one of the unsurpassed economists of the twentieth century. In the first of the volumes to be published are contained separate previously unpublished works that Mises wrote from 1940 through 1944, when much of the world was at war. This volume presents papers from a conference organized by the Korea Development Institute and the IMF. The purpose of this high-level conference was for policymakers and academics from the Asian region and from G-20 countries to discuss forward-looking economic and financial issues of interest to the international community, such as restoring normalcy to fiscal policy, macroprudential regulation, the future of the financial system, global fiscal imbalances, and the international monetary system. Topics include: (1) A strategy for renormalizing fiscal and monetary policies in advanced economies. Key principles for restoring financial stability in the wake of the crisis, including the timing and sequence for exit, are identified. (2) Rethinking macroeconomic policy. This section examines if and how macroeconomic policy should respond to sectoral imbalances and asset-price and housing imbalances, as well as a potential role for macroprudential regulation. (3) Redesigning the financial system of the future. Responses by both policymakers and the private sector to recent events are evaluated in terms of how they will shape the future financial system and its role in the global economy. (4) Global imbalances. The argument is made that there is an urgent need to address the domestic and international distortions that are a key cause of imbalances; failure to do so would threaten the sustainability of the recovery. (5) The future of the international monetary system. Steps that can be taken to address the inherent weaknesses in the current system are described, including possible solutions on both the demand side and on the supply side.

"In the 1990s, Yugoslavia, which had once been a role model for development, became a symbol for state collapse, external intervention and post-war reconstruction. Today the region has two international protectorates, contested states and borders, severe ethnic polarisation and minority concerns. In this first in-depth critical analysis of international administration, aid and reconstruction policies in Kosovo, Jens Stilhoff Sorensen argues that the region must be analysed as a whole, and that the process of state collapse and recent changes in aid policy must be interpreted in connection to the wider transformation of the global political economy and world order. He examines the shifting inter- and intracommunity relations, the emergence of a 'political economy' of conflict, and of informal clientelist arrangements in Serbia and Kosovo and provides a framework for interpreting the collapse of the Yugoslav state, the emergence of ethnic conflict and shadow economies, and the character of western aid and intervention.
