Synopsis Reconceptualising education support services in South Africa by : Johnnie Hay

Inclusive education has been phased into South Africa since 2001 but relies heavily upon adequate support services to support learners and teachers experiencing barriers to learning and development. This book focuses on the different levels of support provided in South African education – from School-based Support Teams to District-based Support Teams through to special and full-service schools, and how these could be reconceptualised to provide improved support to learners and teachers. Current research indicates that inclusive education is being implemented in varied and fragmented forms across the country, and the point of departure of this work is that education support services need to be improved and reconceptualised to ensure better support for inclusive education.

Synopsis Towards a holistic approach to support learners at risk of interrupted development by : Macalane J. Malindi

The COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that came with it led to unprecedented disruptions in learner development and put them at risk of poor developmental outcomes. It is thus important that the extent of the disruption on their development and the support needs of learners be investigated. Researching the impact of the disruption should focus on holistic development. In this book, the authors use multiple research approaches and methods of gathering data in their respective fields to examine the impact of the disruption and determine the support needs of learners. Data gathered through the different methods are processed and findings are presented. The findings have implications for both practice and future research in the fields of inclusive education, learner support, educational psychology, movement education, Life Orientation and curriculum development.

Synopsis Disability, Poverty and Education by : Nidhi Singal

This book is a succinct and distinctive presentation of current research addressing educational issues in relation to children and young people with disabilities in Southern contexts. Even though people with disabilities are disproportionately over-represented in the majority world, there is a lack of texts which bring together empirical insights highlighting the unique socio-economic and cultural realities of these contexts and the ways in which these have shaped developments in education. This book provides a comprehensive and critical overview of a range of issues, such as the dilemmas in conceptual translations, analysis of international aid and national policies, evaluation of various educational interventions, and issues interrogating the purpose of education. Bringing together various research projects conducted in eight different countries, this book successfully captures a unique spread of cross-cultural issues. It was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Inclusive Education.

Synopsis Creating Effective Teaching and Learning Spaces: Shaping Futures and Envisioning Unity in Diversity and Transformation by : Zilungile Lungi Sosibo

Higher education in post-apartheid South Africa was always likely to attract academic interest, and yet there remains a dearth of research on creating teaching and learning spaces suitable for students from diverse backgrounds. Using examples from higher education institutions across the Southern African Developing Community (SADC) region, this volume explores the ways teaching and learning spaces are being used to advance the transformation agenda of higher education in these regions, and provides concrete recommendations for the future. The book is sure to appeal to academics from a variety of disciplines - from African, African American and ethnic studies to education and sociology. It will be of particular interest to teacher trainers, administrators and policy-makers working in higher education, and anyone else with a stake in managing cultural diversity in education.

Synopsis Education and Transition by : Jenni Karlsson

This bibliography compiles works that convey the scope and depth of the transition in South African education, as well as a range of perspectives and positions. Although not an exhaustive list, it gathers together significant national government policy documents, especially those of the Department of Education; stakeholder position papers; the insights of intellectuals who, in most cases, have been intimately involved in the process; and sources that are often inaccessible through normal computer-based searches. Entries have been grouped into three sections: government-policy documents and statements; stakeholder positions; and the critical responses of researchers, academics, and individual observers. Within each section, a simple classification provides access to items on a particular aspect of the education system. Each subsection is arranged alphabetically by author or, in the case of government publications, by title. Some of the types of documents that are annotated include policy statements, annual reports, governance papers, resources for learning, racial-integration reports, specialized-education and support-services documents, and articles on educator development. At the close of the bibliography, some titles of monthly and quarterly periodicals that focus on education are included. These publications record and/or analyze the unfolding events of educational transformation in South Africa. (RJM)
