Synopsis The Recollections of Rifleman Harris by : Benjamin Randell Harris
'Describing narrow squeaks and terrible deprivations, Harris's unflowery account of fortitude and resilience in Spain still bristles with a freshness and an invigorating spikiness' SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY 'A most vivid record of the war in Spain and Portugal against Napoleon' MAIL ON SUNDAY Benjamin Harris was a young shepherd from Dorset who joined the army in 1802 and later joined the dashing 95th Rifles. His battalion was ordered to Portugal, where he marched under the burning sun, weighed down by his kit and great-coat, plus all the tools and leather he had to carry as the battalion's cobbler - 'the lapstone I took the liberty of flinging to the Devil'. Rifleman Harris was a natural story-teller with a remarkable tale to unfold, and his Recollections have become one of the most popular military books of all time.

Synopsis Recollections of Rifleman Harris, (Old 95th) With Anecdotes of His Officers and His Comrads (Classic Reprint) by : Benjamin Harris
Excerpt from Recollections of Rifleman Harris, (Old 95th) With Anecdotes of His Officers and His Comrads The following pages, describing the chee quered life of a private soldier, who served during the most glorious period of our military history, speak so plainly for them selves, as scarcely to need any introductory remarks from the editor, further than the assurance of his own sincere conviction of their truth. Such works as the narratives of Rifleman Harris, from the very nature of their details, afford occasionally more graphic sketches of the actual scenes of war, in its stern realities and concomitant circumstances, than the more stately and largely-grouped pictures of the Historian. Synopsis The American Sharpe by : Gareth Glover
Sharpe and his adventures has made the 95th Foot renowned again and the discovery of an unpublished diary by an American from Charleston South Carolina who served, despite his father’s objections, as an officer in this elite regiment has caused great excitement. James Penman Gairdner was born in Charleston, South Carolina, but he was sent back to the ‘Old Country’ for his education, receiving his schooling at Harrow. After school, rather than joining his father’s merchant business he decided to become a soldier, receiving a commission in the famous 95th Rifles. He subsequently served, without a break, from the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo in January 1812 until the end of the war in 1814. He then fought in the Waterloo campaign and formed part of the Army of Occupation. He was wounded on three occasions. Throughout his service he kept a journal, which he managed to maintain on almost a daily basis. This journal, along with a number of letters that he wrote to his family, have been edited by renowned historian Gareth Glover and are presented here to the public for the first time. Readers will not find dramatic stories of great battles or adventurous escapades. Instead, Gairdner, details the everyday life of one of Wellington’s soldiers; one of marches and billets, of the weather, the places and the people of the Iberian Peninsula and of Paris and Occupied France – the real nature of soldering. His diaries also highlight the very strange relationship between these newly independent Americans and the ‘Old Country’ they had so recently fought with; which even allowed for a true American boy to fight in the British Army, but not in America!

Synopsis Recollections of Rifleman Harris by : Introduction by Sir Jo By Henry Curling
Although there are many accounts of the Peninsular War by fighting men, this book is justly famed because it is a rarity: a memoir dictated by a ranker in Sir John Moore's army. At a time when many members of his class were illiterate, Benjamin Harris, a 'Dorsetshire sheep-boy' serving in the 95th Regiment of Foot from 1803 conveys the hard life of an old sweat fighting both the French and the Iberian climate in lively and vivid prose. Harris records the sicknesses and medicines suffered by ordinary soldiers; recounts the savage punishment of a fellow Rifleman, and the cut and thrust of military life from a distinctly worm's eye view, giving invaluable insights into the life of an ordinary soldier in the Napoleonic Wars. The book's editor, Henry Curling, persuaded Harris to recount his memoirs when he met him while Harris was working as a London cobbler in the 1830s. First published in 1848, this memoir remains one of the most valuable documents to have come down to us from the early Peninsular War.

Synopsis Death to the French by : C. S. Forester
"Death to the French" is an absorbing historical novel about the Peninsular War. It narrates the experiences of a British soldier, Rifleman Dodd, who gets separated from the army, joins the guerrillas and becomes their leader to avoid being caught by the French. The soldier and the story of his adventures is fictionalized, but the events are somewhat based on real historical events.
