Synopsis Recapturing Technology for Education by : Mark Gura
Despite significant investment of funds, time, and effort in bringing computers, the Internet, and related technologies into our classrooms, educators have turned their back on these new power tools of the intellect. School is the last remaining institution to keep 21st Century technology at arms distance. How can technology be used to enrich and enhance traditional approaches to instruction? How does it move teaching into new territory? What actions need to be taken in order to successfully transform our schools to effective, technology-supported learning environments? Why has this happened and what can be done to reverse it? Recapturing Technology for Education answers these questions. It re-establishes the legitimacy and urgency of tapping technology to make our schools relevant and effective once again. This book explores the reasons why educators have resisted making the leap to a technology-supported brand of teaching and learning, and it will provide an education worthy of 21st Century children. Includes: Interviews and quotes of experts in the field, References, reviews, and recommendations of free resources available to educators. Written for both education professionals and lay persons, it will also be useful to all who are interested in understanding Instructional Technology and unleashing its potential to positively impact.

Synopsis Wounded by School by : Kirsten Olson
In her provocative new book, education writer and critic Kirsten Olson brings to light the devastating consequences of an educational approach that values conformity over creativity, flattens students' interests, and dampens down differences among learners. She also presents the experiences of wounded learners who have healed and shows what teachers, parents, and students can do right now to help themselves stay healthy.

Synopsis Economic Prosperity Recaptured by : Seppo Honkapohja
Many countries have experienced major economic changes since the mid-1980s as a result of the deregulation and liberalization of national financial systems—two key aspects of globalization—with some experiencing boom and bust in rapid succession. The small Northern European country of Finland has been hailed as a success story for achieving renewed economic growth and prosperity after a financial crisis and deep depression in the early 1990s. Economic Prosperity Recaptured offers a detailed analysis of the rapid swings in Finland's recent economic development, from initial overheating in the late 1980s through deep crisis in the early 1990s to recovery and growth since the mid-1990s. Finland's complex road to recovery offers excellent examples of both unsuccessful and successful policy responses to changing circumstances. The authors examine the three relatively distinct periods of Finland's recent experience, analyzing the adequacy of the macroeconomic policy response in each case. They assess the real economic effects of financial constraints and look for evidence of the "credit channel" of the monetary system. Finland's rapid economic growth since the mid-1990s is largely the result of its structural transformation into a high-tech economy; Nokia is the most famous example of this information and communication technology success. Elaborating on Finland's ICT revolution, the authors demonstrate that well-designed economic policies contributed to Finland's economic turnaround. CESifo Book series

Synopsis Classroom Robotics by : Kathleen P. King
The purpose of this book is to reach out to teachers, parents, coaches, and students who may be hoping to, or just investigating the possibility of, how to get started with robotics. At the same time, we hope to leverage the efforts of those who have been hard at work and "play" in this massive movement for many years, applaud their efforts, and provide them with documentation, support, and additional resources to reach further into the possibilities they can help create for all of us in bringing the power and potential of learning through robotics to more students, to the classroom and beyond. Not only does this book provide resources and firsthand insight into this exciting field, but it also provides one-of-a-kind perspectives of curricular applications of robotics for student learning.

Synopsis Teaching with Technologies by : Sarah Younie
This book provides a baseline for effective technology practice, offering a comprehensive overview of theory, research and practice. In particular the book: Brings together research findings to provide an evidence based approach to using technology in the classroom Provides an understanding of how technologies can and should inform teaching and learning Highlights effective practice As well as capturing the extensive developments in this field over the last three decades the book identifies ‘what works’ with technology and education. There is detailed consideration of how technology can enhance learning and inform pedagogic approaches together with examples. This not only informs but, most importantly, allows teachers to develop their practice in order to incorporate and exploit the affordances of educational technologies, providing a sound theoretical underpinning to classroom practice with technologies. Significantly the book urges educators to embrace new ways of working using technologies to support knowledge sharing and building. It also looks ahead and reports teachers’ views of schools of the future, where learners and teachers may work flexibly through a curriculum that is personalised and focused on 21st century needs. Teaching with Technologies is essential reading for busy teachers and students who wish to gain an informed overview of the key issues pertaining to technology and education. “This is a very timely book reminding us of the complex history of technology integration into teaching and learning in this country, as well as giving an overview of current practice, and providing a prescient look to the future.” Dr Chris Higgins, formerly Principal Lecturer, Oxford Brookes University, UK “The manner in which UK teachers and students have, and are currently, engaging with digital technologies across the curriculum and at all levels of schooling is clearly presented and, together with links to research and classroom practice, is a major strength of the book.” Anthony Jones, ICT in Education and Research, The University of Melbourne, Australia
