Synopsis Railway Signal Engineering (Mechanical) (Classic Reprint) by : Leonard P. Lewis

Excerpt from Railway Signal Engineering (Mechanical) The signalling of railways has developed rapidly, more especially during comparatively recent years, until it is now one of the most important branches of the Engineering Department. On its efficiency depends to a large extent the safety of the travelling public. That the Board of Trade recognises this fact is evidenced by the strict supervision which it exercises over the signalling of railways and the careful inspection made of new signalling installations. The demand of the public for greater facilities both for travelling and for merchandise, involving a greater density of traffic, has added to the complexity of railway working, while the modern necessity for speed and for heavier and longer trains has still further increased the difficulties which beset the signal engineer in providing immunity from accident. The advance in signal engineering practice has, however, been commensurate with the advance of railways. The efficiency of the system adopted on British railways may be gauged by the few accidents which occur compared with the enormous number of train movements, and of these accidents the majority are due not so much to any deficiency in'the system as to the personal equation, which unfortunately cannot be entirely eliminated. The apparatus works by means of an intermittent contact rail, and with each rail which is designed to cause an application of the brakes of trains there is installed, a suitable distance in the rear, another rail, which does not apply brakes, but instead gives an audible signal in the cab. The American Railway Association held its spring meeting in New York on May 17. The committee on transportation in its report strongly urged members to adopt the language of the lately revised Standard Code of train and signal rules wherever possible, also that in printing new books of rules, reference be made on the title page to the effect that the rules are in accordance with the Standard Code of the American Railway Association. The joint committee on automatic train stops has issued a circular calling for information as to the latest experiments. Nine railroads are now testing such devices. No designer has yet fully complied with the requisites prescribed by the Association. The committee has arranged that small local committees of engineers shall be appointed by the chairman to follow up the tests now being conducted and report in detail thereon during the next few months so that the association may be kept fully advised of all progress made in the art and, if possible, be able to aid therein.
