Synopsis Radio Frequency Photonic In-phase and Quadrature-phase Vector Modulation by : Kyle Davis

The focus of this thesis is to investigate the implementation of Radio Frequency (RF) In-Phase and Quadrature-Phase (I/Q) vector modulation through the use of modern photonic components and sub-systems which offer extremely wide RF intrinsic bandwidths. All-electronic vector modulators suffer from frequency coverage limitations and amplitude and phase instability due to components such as phase shifters and variable gain controllers operating at or near 100\% bandwidth. In stark contrast, once an RF signal has been modulated onto an optical carrier, the percent bandwidth of the RF to carrier is typically less than 0.01\% percent. The fundamental mechanisms and basic electronic and photonic components needed to achieve vector modulation is introduced first. The primary electrical component required in most architectures is the 90° RF hybrid coupler, which is required to generate the RF I and Q terms. The two primary photonic building blocks, aside from the laser, electro-optic modulator and demodulator, are Mach-Zehnder Modulators (MZM) and Variable Optical Attenuators (VOA). Through the utilization of these components, multiple past architectures are explored and multiple new architectures are designed simulated. For each architecture, there is a discussion on the practical implementation. Considerations such as system complexity, integration, and sensitivity to unwanted environmental stimuli are taken into account with potential solutions to alleviate these risks. In closing, the noise figure and its impact on Spur-Free Dynamic Range (SFDR) for a basic RF photonic link is derived to provide a system-level figure of merit that can be used, in most RF applications, to determine the overall performance utility current and future designs.

Synopsis Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits by : Larry A. Coldren

Diode Lasers and Photonic Integrated Circuits, Second Edition provides a comprehensive treatment of optical communication technology, its principles and theory, treating students as well as experienced engineers to an in-depth exploration of this field. Diode lasers are still of significant importance in the areas of optical communication, storage, and sensing. Using the the same well received theoretical foundations of the first edition, the Second Edition now introduces timely updates in the technology and in focus of the book. After 15 years of development in the field, this book will offer brand new and updated material on GaN-based and quantum-dot lasers, photonic IC technology, detectors, modulators and SOAs, DVDs and storage, eye diagrams and BER concepts, and DFB lasers. Appendices will also be expanded to include quantum-dot issues and more on the relation between spontaneous emission and gain.

Synopsis Handbook of Radio and Optical Networks Convergence by : Tetsuya Kawanishi

This handbook provides comprehensive knowledge on device and system technologies for seamlessly integrated networks of various types of transmission media such as optical fibers and millimeter and THz waves to offer super high-speed data link service everywhere. The seamless integration of the knowledge of radio and optical technologies is needed to construct wired and wireless seamless networks. High-frequency bands such as millimeter-wave and THz-wave bands where super wideband spectra are available can offer high-speed data transmission and high-resolution sensing. However, the expected coverage is limited due to large wave propagation loss. Thus, convergence of radio and optical links is indispensable to construct worldwide networks. The radio and optical technologies share the same physics and are closely related to each other but have been developed independently. Therefore, there is a big gap between these two fields. Bridging the two fields, this handbook is also intended as a common platform to design integrated networks consisting of wireless and wired links. Full coverage of wireless and wired convergence fields ranging from basics of device and transmission media to applications allows the reader to efficiently access all the important references in this single handbook. Further, it also showcases state-of-the-art technology and cases of its use.

Synopsis Optical Fiber Telecommunications by : Alan Willner

Optical Fiber Telecommunications, Volume Eleven, covers the latest in optical fiber communications and their potential to penetrate and complement other forms of communication, such as wireless access, on-premises networks, interconnects and satellites. This updated edition of this classic, first published in 1979, examines opportunities for future optical fiber technology by presenting the latest advances on key topics, such as 5G wireless access, inter and intra data center communications, THz technologies, secure communications, and free space digital optical links. Topics of note include sections on foundries for widespread user access, designing photonic integrated circuits (PICs), monolithic and hybrid integration technologies, nanophotonics, and advanced and non-conventional data modulation formats. The traditional emphasis of achieving higher data rates and longer transmission distances are also addressed through chapters on space-division-multiplexing using multimode and multicore fibers, undersea cable systems, and reconfigurable networking. This book is an indispensable reference on the latest advances in key technologies for future fiber optic communications. It is suitable for university and industry researchers, graduate students, optical systems implementers, network operators, managers and investors. Updated edition presents the latest advances in optical fiber components, systems, subsystems and networks Written by leading authorities from academia and industry Gives a self-contained overview of specific technologies, covering both the state-of-the-art and future research challenges
