Synopsis Quantitative Analysis of Mineral and Energy Resources by : C.F. Chung
This volume contains the edited papers prepared by lecturers and participants of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Statistical Treatments for Estimation of Mineral and Energy Resources" held at II Ciocco (Lucca), Italy, June 22 - July 4, 1986. During the past twenty years, tremendous efforts have been made to acquire quantitative geoscience information from ore deposits, geochemical, geophys ical and remotely-sensed measurements. In October 1981, a two-day symposium on "Quantitative Resource Evaluation" and a three-day workshop on "Interactive Systems for Multivariate Analysis and Image Processing for Resource Evaluation" were held in Ottawa, jointly sponsored by the Geological Survey of Canada, the International Association for Mathematical Geology, and the International Geological Correlation Programme. Thirty scientists from different countries in Europe and North America were invited to form a forum for the discussion of quantitative methods for mineral and energy resource assessment. Since then, not only a multitude of research projects directed toward quantitative analysis in the Earth Sciences, but also recent advances in hardware and software technology, such as high-resolution graphics, data-base management systems and statistical packages on mini and micro-computers, made it possible to study large geoscience data sets. In addition, methods of image analysis have been utilized to capture data in digital form and to supply a variety of tools for charaterizing natural phenomena.

Synopsis Computerized Basin Analysis by : Jan Harff
This symposium on 'Computerized Basin Analysis for Prognosis of Energy - and Mineral Resources' was organized by Dr. Jan Harff, chairman ofthe Scientific Committee for the meeting, in Giistrowin what was then East Germany. Sponsors ofthis meeting were the International Union of Geological Sciences' Commission on Storage, Automatic Pro cessing and Retrieval of Geologic Data (COGEODATA), Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), National Oil and Gas Trustofthe GDR, and the International Association for Mathematical Geology (IAMG). Main topics of the symposium, held from 19-22 June 1990, were application of computer methods to the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas, coal, and other energy and mineral resources. There were computer demonstrations as well as a one-day field trip to the geothermic heating plant in Waren. The Regional Group for Eastern Europe of COG EO DATA also met during the conference. Fifty-one papers were presented including eight poster sessions by authors from 14 countries. As was to be expected, there was a large percentage of papers from the East Bloc of European countries, especially the GDR, USSR, and the CSSR with a fair representation from the FRG and USA and a smattering from the nine others. Most of the papers were application oriented and related to the mineral industries. There was ample time for exchange of ideas and dissemination of material.

Synopsis Computer Applications in Resource Estimation by : G. Gaal
Quantitative resource assessment methods play an increasing role in exploration for petroleum, water and minerals. This volume presents an international review on the state-of-the-art of the computerized methodology in resource exploration. The papers taken from those presented at the symposium are classified to either techniques, i.e., trend analysis; classification techniques; geostatistics; image analysis; expert systems/artificial intelligence; inventories; tomography and others, or to resources, i.e., petroleum, water, metals and non-metals.

Synopsis Undiscovered Petroleum and Mineral Resources by : Lawrence J. Drew
This book is a guide to the management and use of formulated feeds in semi-intensive and intensive fish and shrimp culture. Feeds represent the major variable operating costs in intensive aquaculture, and optimizing their use represents an opportunity for many farmers to increase or maintain the profitability of their enterprise. Fish farmers have an ever widening range of feed types and feeding methods from which to choose, and must carefully monitor the use of feeds in order to control costs. This book includes details of those biological, environmental, and nutritional factors which influence the feeding, growth and survival of fish and shrimp, and of which some understanding is essential in the establishment of effective feeding practices. Details are given of feed handling and storage methods, and the various methods available for feeding fish are described and their relative methods appraised. Methods for selection of the appropriate feed types, ration sizes, and feeding schedules are included, and details given of how to measure performance of feeding programs. Throughout the text reference is made to key areas of current research, and examples are drawn from different sectors of the industry to illustrate the general principles of feed management.
