Synopsis A Cross-layer Approach to Resource-allocation with QoS Support in WiMax Networks by : Omar Mohammad Hammouri

Abstract: The work here proposes a framework for resource-allocation in mobile worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) networks with quality of service (QoS) support that aims to balance between service provider's revenue and subscriber's satisfaction. Since a better optimization can be achieved with the exchange of information across protocol layers, a cross-layer design approach is followed to efficiently utilize the scarce radio resources available to Mobile WiMAX networks. In particular, the thesis presents a resource-allocation algorithm at the physical (PHY) layer that supports multiple connections with diverse service classes and QoS requirements. The algorithm prioritizes each connection bases on the QoS requirements (for example the required minimum data rate and maximum latency), queue status, and channel condition of every connection. Resources are then allocated in a way that maximizes the system throughput while meeting the overall transmit-power constraint and QoS guarantees, and ensuring fairness among users. The algorithm is shown to provide a performance that is comparable to the maximum system throughput approach which does not support QoS or fairness.

Synopsis Auction Based Resource Allocation in WiMAX by : Sahana Pillappaiah

WiMAX delivers Quality of Service (QoS) to users based on a pre-determined traffic classification model. We develop an auction framework to bid for allocating the resources based on the utilities and traffic demands. We classify the users into two categories Premium User who has a high priority access and Non premium user having low-priority access. In principle larger the bandwidth more resources WiMAX can support for the user traffic. We apply the concept of Incentive compatibility and use bidding mechanism to maximize the revenue and social welfare of the WiMAX networks. We have considered different cases to achieve this. First, Dependency of networks sharing the resources based on the concept of reduction to a maximum matching in weighted graphs. Second, Independency of networks with which it will share its resources. This is done by designing a Maxmin fairness algorithm with two different segments in a decision making process: (a) A time dependent function that considers the time when packets wait in queues; (b) A Buffer utility function to consider buffer size in scheduling to prevent overflow and proportional fairness scheme to gives a fair share to users and maximize the social welfare and revenue. Finally we simulate a seven cell approach in Opnet-WiMAX simulator for VoIP, FTP and HTTP traffic with different QoS requirements and show premium users gets prioritized access.

Synopsis WiMAX Security and Quality of Service by : Seok-Yee Tang

WiMAX is the first standard technology to deliver true broadband mobility at speeds that enable powerful multimedia applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), online gaming, mobile TV, and personalized infotainment. WiMAX Security and Quality of Service, focuses on the interdisciplinary subject of advanced Security and Quality of Service (QoS) in WiMAX wireless telecommunication systems including its models, standards, implementations, and applications. Split into 4 parts, Part A of the book is an end-to-end overview of the WiMAX architecture, protocol, and system requirements. Security is an essential element in the wireless world and Part B is fully dedicated to this topic. Part C provides an in depth analysis of QoS, including mobility management in WiMAX. Finally, Part D introduces the reader to advanced and future topics. One of the first texts to cover security, QoS and deployments of WiMAX in the same book. Introduces the primary concepts of the interdisciplinary nature of WiMAX security and QoS, and also includes discussion of hot topics in the field. Written for engineers and researchers, answering practical questions from industry and the experimental field in academia. Explains how WiMAX applications’ security and QoS are interconnected and interworked among the cross layers.

Synopsis Resource Allocation in WiMAX Mesh Networks by : Stephen Atambire Nsoh

The IEEE 802.16 standard popularly known as WiMAX is at the forefront of the technological drive. Achieving high system throughput in these networks is challenging due to interference which limits concurrent transmissions. In this thesis, we study routing and link scheduling inWiMAX mesh networks. We present simple joint routing and link scheduling algorithms that have outperformed most of the existing proposals in our experiments. Our session based routing and links scheduling produced results approximately 90% of a trivial lower bound. We also study the problem of quality of service (QoS) provisioning in WiMAX mesh networks. QoS has become an attractive area of study driven by the increasing demand for multimedia content delivered wirelessly. To accommodate the different applications, the IEEE 802.16 standard defines four classes of service. In this dissertation, we propose a comprehensive scheme consisting of routing, link scheduling, call admission control (CAC) and channel assignment that considers all classes of service. Much of the work in the literature considers each of these problems in isolation. Our routing schemes use a metric that combines interference and traffic load to compute routes for requests while our link scheduling ensures that the QoS requirements of admitted requests are strictly met. Results from our simulation indicate that our routing and link scheduling schemes significantly improve network performance when the network is congested.

This book presents a mathematical treatment of the radio resource allocation of modern cellular communications systems in contested environments. It focuses on fulfilling the quality of service requirements of the living applications on the user devices, which leverage the cellular system, and with attention to elevating the users’ quality of experience. The authors also address the congestion of the spectrum by allowing sharing with the band incumbents while providing with a quality-of-service-minded resource allocation in the network. The content is of particular interest to telecommunications scheduler experts in industry, communications applications academia, and graduate students whose paramount research deals with resource allocation and quality of service.
