Synopsis PUNCH CARTOONS OF THE GREAT WAR - 119 Great War cartoons published in Punch by : Various

Herein are 119 satirical cartoons published in Punch between 1890 and 1915 which focus on the growing threat of war in the years preceding and during the first two years of the GREAT WAR. The cartoons are grouped into the following categories: The Days Preceding the WarThe StruggleUncle SamThe Comedies of the Great TragedyWomen and Children FirstThe New Rake's Progress—Unser KaiserThe RaiderThe Unspeakable TurkItalia! The cartoons encompass all the Allied nations and most of those aligned with the Central Powers. The sea war also features the antics of both navies and of course the sinking of non-military liners. During the war the media swung into action in effect becoming an Allied propaganda machine. In addition to Punch, Dutchman Louis Raemakers was also proactive in this media. Raemakers cartoons were so effective that he and his family had to flee the Netherlands when the German High Command offered a reward for his capture. Working in London he continued to publish his cartoons mainly in The Times and even went on a promotional tour of the USA. It was thought that his many works, which can be seen in the eBooks Raemakers Cartoons of WWI – vols. 1 & 2, was partly instrumental in changing the opinion of the American public towards involvement in the “European” war. The effect of these cartoons on rallying public opinion before and during the Great War was incalculable and the propaganda machine continued to play a major role in the conflicts following the Great War. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Punch, Cartoons, Published, Louis Raemakers, , Admiral, Allies, Australia, Austria, BELGIUM, BELIEVE, Berlin, BLOCKADE, Boer, Botha, Britain, British, Brusilov, Bull, CALAIS, Camel, Canada, Captain, Chorus, Christian, Dame, dangerous, Delville Wood,, EAGLE, Eagle, Eastern, Emperor, ENEMY, Europa, Europe, FAIR, FOUL, FRONT, Gallipoli, General, German, German Headquarters, GOD, Grand, GREAT WAR, HATE, Holland, HONOUR, Hood, Imperial, India, Inter-Parliamentary, JACK-IN-THE-BOX, John, Kaiser Wilhelm, KING, Marne, Messines, New Zealand, Officer, Order, PARIS, Passchendaele, Photographer, Pilot, Prince, RAIDER, Red, Riding, RUSSIA, South Africa, South West Africa, Spring Offensive, STOP, Sultan, The Somme, Tipperary, Tirpitz, TRIUMPH, Turk, Turkey, Uncle Sam, United States of America, USA, Verdun, Western Front, WILLIAM, WOMEN, WWI, Ypres, Propaganda, media, newspaper, magazine

Synopsis Humour in British First World War Literature by : Emily Anderson

This book explores how humorous depictions of the Great War helped to familiarise, domesticate and tame the conflict. In contrast to the well-known First World War literature that focuses on extraordinary emotional disruption and the extremes of war, this study shows other writers used humour to create a gentle, mild amusement, drawing on familiar, popular genres and forms used before 1914. Emily Anderson argues that this humorous literature helped to transform the war into quotidian experience. Based on little-known primary material uncovered through detailed archival research, the book focuses on works that, while written by celebrated authors, tend not to be placed in the canon of Great War literature. Each chapter examines key examples of literary texts, ranging from short stories and poetry, to theatre and periodicals. In doing so, the book investigates the complex political and social significance of this tame style of humour.

Synopsis The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion by : Brian M. Kane

The ultimate book for Prince Valiant fans and collectors. Out of print for over a decade, The Prince Valiant Companion has become a Holy Grail for collectors of the series. Now, in anticipation of the seventy-fifth anniversary of comics’ longest-running adventure strip, and to celebrate their own just-launched reprinting of the strip’s classic earliest years, Fantagraphics is proud to present an expanded version of this hard-to-find collector’s item. Compiled by award-winning Foster biographer Brian M. Kane, The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion beautifully and definitively showcases the careers of artists Hal Foster, John Cullen Murphy, and Gary Gianni. In addition to updating the original version’s story synopsis section with over thirty years of material, The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion also contains rare and new articles. Included in this volume is a never before reprinted newspaper feature from 1949, Foster’s final interview conducted by Arn Saba, an extensive interview with John Cullen Murphy, and a new interview with the current Prince Valiant creative team of Gary Gianni and Mark Schultz. The Companion also contains a new, in-depth article by Kane on Foster’s artistic influences, as well as a foreword by comics historian Brian Walker, and an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ray Bradbury. A special feature of The Companion is a sixteen-page color section of carefully selected strips from the entire run of the comic. Showcasing this section are eight pages by Foster, scanned and digitally restored from original color engraver’s proofs that had been carefully stored and preserved for over forty years. For the first time ever, collectors will be able to see Prince Valiant as Foster intended it to be seen, with all of his fine inked line work intact. Rounding out this section are four John Cullen Murphy pages from the Murphy family’s collection of proofs, and four Gary Gianni pages that were selected by the artist and digitally recolored under his supervision.

Synopsis Dressed for War by : Nina Edwards

Men in khaki and grey squatting in the trenches, women at work, gender bending in goggles and overalls over their trousers, a girl at the Paris theatre in pleated, beaded silk, a bangle on her forearm made from copper fuse wire from the Somme. What people wear matters. Copiously illustrated, this book is the story of what people on both sides wore on the front line and on the home front through the seismic years of World War I. Nina Edwards, reveals fresh aspects of the war through the prism of the smallest details of personal dress, of clothes, hair and accessories, both in uniform and civilian wear. She explores how, during a period of extraordinary upheaval and rapid change, a particular preference for a type of razor blade or perfume, say, or the just-so adjustment to the tilt of a hat, offer insights into the individual experience of men, women and children during the course of World War I.

Synopsis Lincoln Seen and Heard by : Harold Holzer

"Holzer also takes a closer look at Lincoln's oratory, the words of a man often ridiculed for his homespun manner of speaking. He shows how Lincoln's choice of words in the Emancipation Proclamation was actually designed to minimize its humanitarianism and argues that the story of his failure at Gettysburg has been unfairly exaggerated."--BOOK JACKET.
