Synopsis Antimicrobial Drug Resistance by : Douglas Mayers

This ? rst edition of Antimicrobial Drug Resistance grew out of a desire by the editors and authors to have a comprehensive resource of information on antimicrobial drug resistance that encompassed the current information available for bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses. We believe that this information will be of value to clinicians, epidemiologists, microbiologists, virologists, parasitologists, public health authorities, medical students and fellows in training. We have endeavored to provide this information in a style which would be accessible to the broad community of persons who are concerned with the impact of drug resistance in our cl- ics and across the broader global communities. Antimicrobial Drug Resistance is divided into Volume 1 which has sections covering a general overview of drug resistance and mechanisms of drug resistance ? rst for classes of drugs and then by individual microbial agents including bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses. Volume 2 addresses clinical, epidemiologic and public health aspects of drug resistance along with an overview of the conduct and interpretation of speci? c drug resistance assays. Together, these two volumes offer a comprehensive source of information on drug resistance issues by the experts in each topic.

Synopsis Pseudomonas Aeruginosa the Opportunist by : Robert B. Fick, Jr.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa the Opportunist provides an in depth analysis of clinically relevant pathogenetic mechanisms and selected disease states. The book presents the most current discussion of pathogenic mechanisms logically arranged from the microbiology of the Pseudomonadaceae and initial mucosal adherence, progessing to microcolony formation and release of a wide assortment of virulence factors, and closing with the contribution of host cells to the disease process. Cellular and molecular disease mechanisms are covered, including genetic regulation of virulence-associated bacterial products. Future research trends are highlighted as well. Pseudomonas aeruginosa the Opportunist is an excellent reference for bacteriologists, clinical investigators, and practicing clinicians representing a variety of specialties, including ophthalmology, pediatrics, and transplantation.

Synopsis Pseudomonas Aeruginosa by : Chee Fah Wong

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is characterized by its metabolic versatility and found ubiquitously in soil and aquatic habitats and persists survival on various surfaces of plants, animals and humans. Diversity in Pseudomonas characteristics have led to recent technological advances and lay out important avenues of research focused on the role of Pseudomonas and the molecular mechanisms of their beneficial actions. This book brings together respected P. aeruginosa experts from around the world to provide a timely, extensive and updated review of Pseudomonas research. It covers various aspects in applications of Pseudomonas in molecular engineering of genetic tools for Pseudomonas protein expression, medical and environmental fields including biofilm development, quorum sensing, heavy metal bioremediation and photodynamic therapy as well as the industrially-important lipoxygenase biocatalysis properties. This book is essential reading for scientists working with Pseudomonas and serves as a ready reference and text book for graduate students, young field microbiologists and research scientists in academia, research institutes and industry.

Synopsis Guidelines on Core Components of Infection Prevention and Control Programmes at the National and Acute Health Care Facility Level by : World Health Organization

Health care-associated infections (HAI) are one of the most common adverse events in care delivery and a major public health problem with an impact on morbidity, mortality and quality of life. At any one time, up to 7% of patients in developed and 10% in developing countries will acquire at least one HAI. These infections also present a significant economic burden at the societal level. However, a large percentage are preventable through effective infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. These new guidelines on the core components of IPC programmes at the national and facility level will enhance the capacity of Member States to develop and implement effective technical and behaviour modifying interventions. They form a key part of WHO strategies to prevent current and future threats from infectious diseases such as Ebola, strengthen health service resilience, help combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and improve the overall quality of health care delivery. They are also intended to support countries in the development of their own national protocols for IPC and AMR action plans and to support health care facilities as they develop or strengthen their own approaches to IPC. These are the first international evidence-based guidelines on the core components of IPC programmes. These new WHO guidelines are applicable for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.

Synopsis Biofilm Infections by : Thomas Bjarnsholt

This book will cover both the evidence for biofilms in many chronic bacterial infections as well as the problems facing these infections such as diagnostics and treatment regimes. A still increasing interest and emphasis on the sessile bacterial lifestyle biofilms has been seen since it was realized that that less than 0.1% of the total microbial biomass lives in the planktonic mode of growth. The term was coined in 1978 by Costerton et al. who defined the term biofilm for the first time.In 1993 the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) recognised that the biofilmmode of growth was relevant to microbiology. Lately many articles have been published on the clinical implications of bacterial biofilms. Both original articles and reviews concerning the biofilm problem are available.
