The data included here were compiled for use in the 1980 Renewable Resources Planning Act Timber Assessment conducted by the U.S. Forest Service. They were used to develop structural equations and relationships comprising the 1980 Timber Assessment Market Model. These data series-covering U.S. demand, U.S. supply, and Canada-span 27 years of softwood production and consumption. Many were derived from unpublished sources, so this computation makes such data generally available to analysts for the first time.

This report presents statistical information on the production, trade, consumption, and price of timber products in the United States. Although national data are shown for the most part, some material is given for regions, States, and Canada. Preliminary data for 1979 and 1980 are indicated as such. Italic numbers in parentheses refer to the annotated bibliography on page 77.
