Synopsis Processability and Language Acquisition in the Asia-Pacific Region by : Satomi Kawaguchi
This PALART volume makes an original addition to the Series as it opens a stimulating window on the Asia-Pacific region of the world by bringing together a great deal of empirical and theoretical new work in Second Language Acquisition within the Processability Theory (PT) framework. Readers will be pleasantly surprised to be able to access, within one publication, so much novel and overview information on SLA while maintaining its focus on PT, its theoretical developments including its 2005 (Pienemann et al.) and 2015 (Bettoni & Di Biase) extensions and how they relate to PT’s foundation work (Pienemann 1998), as well as its applications to language learning and teaching in Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Malay and English in countries of the Asia-Pacific region including Australia. This volume demonstrates the vitality and the dynamic nature of PT and its potential as a tool for understanding SLA both theory and practice.

Synopsis Widening Contexts for Processability Theory by : Anke Lenzing
"This book explores relationships between Processability Theory approaches and other approaches to SLA. It is distinctive in two ways. It offers PT-insiders a way to see connections between their familiar traditions and theories with other ways of working. Parallel to this it offers readers who work in other traditions ways of connecting with a research tradition that makes precise testable claims about second language acquisition processes. These dual perspectives mean that both beginning and established SLA researchers as well as those seeking to connect their work with views of language learning will find something of interest. Studies of multiple languages and multiple aspects of language are included. Chapters cover areas as diverse as literacy, language comprehension, language attrition and language testing"--

Synopsis Natural Language Processing and Information Systems by : Mokrane Bouzeghoub
This book includes the papers presented at the fifth International Conference on Application of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB 2000) which was held in Versailles (France) on June 28-30. Following NLDB95 in Versailles, NLDB96 i n Amsterdam, NLDB97 i n Vancouver, and NLDB99 i n Klagenfurt, NLDB 2000 was a forum for exchanging new research results and trends on the benefits of integrating Natural Language resources in Information System Engineering. Since the first NLDB workshop in 1995 it has become apparent that each aspect of an information system life cycle may be improved by natural language techniques: database design (specification, validation, conflict resolution), database query languages, and application programming that use new software engineering research (natural language program specifications). As information systems are now evolving into the communication area, the term databases should be considered in the broader sense of information and communication systems. The main new trend in NLDB 2000 is related to the WEB wave: WEB querying, WEB answering, and information retrieval. Among 47 papers submitted from 18 countries, the program committee selected 29 papers to be presented during the conference. Besides these regular papers, two invited talks (given by Pr. Reind P. van de Riet and Pr. Maurice Gross), and a set of posters and demonstrations are also included in these proceedings.

Synopsis Teaching with Educational Technology in the 21st Century: The Case of the Asia-Pacific Region by : Inoue, Yukiko
With the emphasis on faculty experiences and efforts to enhance higher learning in less-developed regions, Teaching with Educational Technology in the 21st Century: The Case of the Asia-Pacific Region is a comprehensive study of teaching applications involving educational technology. The book encourages collaboration across geographical borders to promote information literacy, facilitate the learning process, and to establish a greater infusion of technology throughout the region. Intended as a guide, Teaching with Educational Technology in the 21st Century: The Case of the Asia-Pacific Region looks clearly at the impact of distance education programs, articulation issues, faculty technical competency levels and offers solutions for policy makers and educators to remain current with basic technical applications. It explains how education is no longer confined to a geographical space and reaches out as a model to all interested in promoting quality higher education across geographical and cultural borders.
