Synopsis Proceedings:10th Taiwan─Philippines Symposium on Analysis by : 郭紅珠

This volume is a special issue which is devoted to selected papers from the 10th Taiwan-Philippines Symposium on Analysis (10th TPSOA) held on 31/March–3/April 2014 at the Garden Villa Hotel, Kaohsiung city, Taiwan and organized mainly by National University of Kaohsiung. The article on page 311 has listed the bilateral participants of Taiwan and the Philippines for the 10 symposiums. The symposiums have brought together mathematicians from the Philippines and Taiwan to share their results and current research activities.

Synopsis Wind Loading of Structures by : John D. Holmes

A Definitive Up-to-Date Reference Wind forces from various types of extreme wind events continue to generate ever-increasing damage to buildings and other structures. Wind Loading of Structures, Third Edition fills an important gap as an information source for practicing and academic engineers alike, explaining the principles of wind loads on structures, including the relevant aspects of meteorology, bluff-body aerodynamics, probability and statistics, and structural dynamics. Written in Line with International Standards Among the unique features of the book are its broad view of the major international codes and standards, and information on the extreme wind climates of a large number of countries of the world. It is directed towards practicing (particularly structural) engineers, and academics and graduate students. The main changes from the earlier editions are: Discussion of potential global warming effects on extreme events More discussion of tornados and tornado-generated damage A rational approach to gust durations for structural design Expanded considerations of wind-induced fatigue damage Consideration of aeolian vibrations of suspended transmission lines Expansion of the sections on the cross-wind response of tall slender structures Simplified approaches to wind loads on "porous" industrial, mining, and oil/gas structures A more general discussion of formats in wind codes and standards Not dedicated to a specific code or standard, Wind Loading of Structures, Third Edition highlights the general format and procedures related to all major codes and standards, addresses structures of various types, and presents you with topics not typically covered in traditional texts such as internal pressures, fatigue damage by wind forces, and equivalent static wind load distributions.

Synopsis Ecological Informatics by : Friedrich Recknagel

Ecological Informatics is defined as the design and application of computational techniques for ecological analysis, synthesis, forecasting and management. The book provides an introduction to the scope, concepts and techniques of this newly emerging discipline. It illustrates numerous applications of Ecological Informatics for stream systems, river systems, freshwater lakes and marine systems as well as image recognition at micro and macro scale. Case studies focus on applications of artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic and adaptive agents to current ecological management issues such as toxic algal blooms, eutrophication, habitat degradation, conservation of biodiversity and sustainable fishery.

Synopsis Engineering for Sustainable Development by : International Centre for Engineering Education

The report highlights the crucial role of engineering in achieving each of the 17 SDGs. It shows how equal opportunities for all is key to ensuring an inclusive and gender balanced profession that can better respond to the shortage of engineers for implementing the SDGs. It provides a snapshot of the engineering innovations that are shaping our world, especially emerging technologies such as big data and AI, which are crucial for addressing the pressing challenges facing humankind and the planet. It analyses the transformation of engineering education and capacity-building at the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that will enable engineers to tackle the challenges ahead. It highlights the global effort needed to address the specific regional disparities, while summarizing the trends of engineering across the different regions of the world.

Synopsis Rapid Propagation of Fast-growing Woody Species by : F. W. G. Baker

Plant cell and tissue culture is now an established method which can be used for clonal propagation of plant material. While such propagation may be uneconomic for field crops which can be readily propagated from seed, the prospects for clonal propagation of woody perennials are greater. A number of woody plants have been shown to produce multiple shoots and roots in vitro, and such micropropagation methods also include embryo culture and somatic embryogenesis. These methods are now becoming established alongside more traditional methods of macropropagation. This book reviews our current knowledge of a number of aspects of these methods for rapid and mass propagaion of fast-growing woody species, and is based on a conference organized by the Committee on the Application of Science to Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture (CASAFA) of the international Council of Scientific Unions. It will therefore be of interest to research workers in plant biotechnology and forestry.
