Synopsis Data Analysis Techniques for High-Energy Physics by : Rudolf Frühwirth

Now thoroughly revised and up-dated, this book describes techniques for handling and analysing data obtained from high-energy and nuclear physics experiments. The observation of particle interactions involves the analysis of large and complex data samples. Beginning with a chapter on real-time data triggering and filtering, the book describes methods of selecting the relevant events from a sometimes huge background. The use of pattern recognition techniques to group the huge number of measurements into physically meaningful objects like particle tracks or showers is then examined and the track and vertex fitting methods necessary to extract the maximum amount of information from the available measurements are explained. The final chapter describes tools and methods which are useful to the experimenter in the physical interpretation and in the presentation of the results. This indispensable guide will appeal to graduate students, researchers and computer and electronic engineers involved with experimental physics.

Synopsis Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics V by : Thomas Ferbel

The fifth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held again at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 71 participants, from 17 different countries. It was another great success, due to the dedication of the inspiring lecturers, the exceptional study body, and, of course, the beautiful setting. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the ca se of the previous ASI's, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first four ASI's, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists.

Synopsis Proceedings of the International Conference on Computing in High Energy Physics '95 by :

"CHEP (Computing in High Energy Physics) is the largest international meeting of the communities of High Energy Physics, Computing Science and the Computing Industry. The sixth conference in this series was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September 1995. The focus of the conference was "Computing for the next Millennium". High Energy Physics is at a point where major changes in the way data acquisition and computing problems are addressed will be called for in the high energy physics programs of the year 2000 and beyond. The conference covered a wide spectrum of topics including Data Access, Storage, and Analysis; Data Acquisition and Triggering; Worldwide Collaboration and Networking; Tools, Languages, and Software Development Environments; and special purpose processing systems. The papers presented both recent progress and radical approaches to computing problems as candidates for the basis of future computing in the field of high energy physics."--Provided by publisher
