Synopsis Automatic Speech Signal Analysis for Clinical Diagnosis and Assessment of Speech Disorders by : Ladan Baghai-Ravary

Automatic Speech Signal Analysis for Clinical Diagnosis and Assessment of Speech Disorders provides a survey of methods designed to aid clinicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of speech disorders such as dysarthria and dyspraxia, with an emphasis on the signal processing techniques, statistical validity of the results presented in the literature, and the appropriateness of methods that do not require specialized equipment, rigorously controlled recording procedures or highly skilled personnel to interpret results. Such techniques offer the promise of a simple and cost-effective, yet objective, assessment of a range of medical conditions, which would be of great value to clinicians. The ideal scenario would begin with the collection of examples of the clients’ speech, either over the phone or using portable recording devices operated by non-specialist nursing staff. The recordings could then be analyzed initially to aid diagnosis of conditions, and subsequently to monitor the clients’ progress and response to treatment. The automation of this process would allow more frequent and regular assessments to be performed, as well as providing greater objectivity.

Synopsis Speech Motor Dynamics in Stuttering by : Hermann F.M. Peters

The present book arose from a conference on Speech Motor Dynamics in Stuttering held at the University of Nijmegen in Nijmegen, the Netherlands from June 13-15, 1985. The conference was organized on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Department of Speech Pathology of the University Hospital. The topic selected for the conference and now developed within this book, Speech Motor Dynamics in Stuttering, was judged to be particularly timely and especially relevant to an emerging body of work on stuttering. For over ten years there had been no confer ences that brought together researchers who have worked on stuttering from perspectives stressing the dynamics of motor processes. Yet during that time major changes have occurred in research on stuttering which signify a growing level of scientific maturity within the problem area. This book attempts to character ize a number of major trends in research on speech motor processes in stuttering. There has been a lessening in the postulation of causes of stuttering in the form of global hypothesis which have tenuous ties to empi rical data. New ideas about speech motor processes in stuttering have been stimulated by researchers who have done productive work on more general issues of motor control. This book therefore directs our attention to a number of models of speech production which are relevant to stuttering.

Synopsis Rehabilitation and Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer by : Eugene N. Myers

This monograph is the result of a workshop entitled "Head and Neck Cancer : Integration of Treatment and Rehabilitation," which was held in January 1984 and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. The purpose of the workshop was to review past research directions focused on head and neck cancer and set new goals where appropriate. As discussed at the meeting, the goal of integrating treatment and rehabilitation is to prevent or minimize the physical (cosmetic or functional) disability and the emotional sequelae commonly associated with head and neck cancer and its treatment. The meeting afforded an opportunity for a diverse group of professionals to exchange ideas and information on effective and desirable methods of treatment and rehabilitation for head and neck cancer patients. Papers were presented and discussions were held with the aim of identifying and resolving some of the problems faced by those who make treatment decisions and provide care for these patients. This workshop highlighted the need for an integration of multi-disciplinary rehabilitation planning at the time of initial treatment for head and neck cancer. It also demonstrated major deficiencies in objective outcome measures used to assess physiological and social function over and above the usual measures of patient survival. Centers which provide multidisciplinary patient management programs and follow adequate patient populations, thus assuring management proficiency, provide the best means of avoiding many of the pitfalls that threaten patients who are managed by a single physician and exposed sequentially to other disciplines only when problems develop. Few other cancers demonstrate the need for anticipatory treatment and rehabilitation to the magnitude required in the management of head and neck cancer.

Synopsis Manual of Clinical Phonetics by : Martin J. Ball

This comprehensive collection equips readers with a state-of-the-art description of clinical phonetics and a practical guide on how to employ phonetic techniques in disordered speech analysis. Divided into four sections, the manual covers the foundations of phonetics, sociophonetic variation and its clinical application, clinical phonetic transcription, and instrumental approaches to the description of disordered speech. The book offers in-depth analysis of the instrumentation used in articulatory, auditory, perceptual, and acoustic phonetics and provides clear instruction on how to use the equipment for each technique as well as a critical discussion of how these techniques have been used in studies of speech disorders. With fascinating topics such as multilingual sources of phonetic variation, principles of phonetic transcription, speech recognition and synthesis, and statistical analysis of phonetic data, this is the essential companion for students and professionals of phonetics, phonology, language acquisition, clinical linguistics, and communication sciences and disorders.
