Synopsis Practical Treatise on the Hive and Honey-Bee (Classic Reprint) by : L. L. Langstroth
Excerpt from Practical Treatise on the Hive and Honey-Bee I am happy to learn from my friend Mr. Langstroth, that a new edition of his work on the Hive and Honey-Bee is called for; I consider it by far the most valuable treatise on these subjects, which has come under my notice. Some years before it was published, I became acquainted with the main characteristics of his system of Bee-culture, and even then, I believed it to be incomparably superior to all others of which I had either read or heard. This conviction has been amply strengthened by the testimony of others, as well as by results which have come under my own observation. In my early life I had no inconsiderable experience in the management of bees, and I am bold to say that the hive which Mr. Langsteoth has invented, is in all respects greatly superior to any which I have ever seen, either in tins or foreign countries. Indeed, I do not believe that any one who takes an intelligent interest in the rearing of bees, can for a moment hesitate to use it; or, rather, can be induced to use any other, when he becomes acquainted with its nature and merits. Synopsis Langstroth's Hive and the Honey-Bee by : L. L. Langstroth
This influential guide by "the father of modern beekeeping," originally published in 1853, constitutes the first descriptive treatise of modern bee management. Its innovations allowed people to engage in actual beekeeping, rather than simply handling bee domiciles and extracting the honey. The techniques it explains and illustrates are still employed 150 years later--including the author's patented invention, a movable frame hive. In a reader-friendly, enthusiastic style, Langstroth addresses every aspect of beekeeping: bee physiology; diseases and enemies of bees; the life-cycles of the queen, drone, and worker; bee-hives; the handling of bees; and many other topics. Unabridged republication of the classic 1878 (fourth) edition.--Publisher description.

Synopsis Honeybee Democracy by : Thomas D. Seeley
How honeybees make collective decisions—and what we can learn from this amazing democratic process Honeybees make decisions collectively—and democratically. Every year, faced with the life-or-death problem of choosing and traveling to a new home, honeybees stake everything on a process that includes collective fact-finding, vigorous debate, and consensus building. In fact, as world-renowned animal behaviorist Thomas Seeley reveals, these incredible insects have much to teach us when it comes to collective wisdom and effective decision making. A remarkable and richly illustrated account of scientific discovery, Honeybee Democracy brings together, for the first time, decades of Seeley's pioneering research to tell the amazing story of house hunting and democratic debate among the honeybees. In the late spring and early summer, as a bee colony becomes overcrowded, a third of the hive stays behind and rears a new queen, while a swarm of thousands departs with the old queen to produce a daughter colony. Seeley describes how these bees evaluate potential nest sites, advertise their discoveries to one another, engage in open deliberation, choose a final site, and navigate together—as a swirling cloud of bees—to their new home. Seeley investigates how evolution has honed the decision-making methods of honeybees over millions of years, and he considers similarities between the ways that bee swarms and primate brains process information. He concludes that what works well for bees can also work well for people: any decision-making group should consist of individuals with shared interests and mutual respect, a leader's influence should be minimized, debate should be relied upon, diverse solutions should be sought, and the majority should be counted on for a dependable resolution. An impressive exploration of animal behavior, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individuals in them.
